Firefighters of Cambridge, Massachusetts spent their Saturday evening battling a large 10-alarm fire on Berkshire street. The fire started in a building that was under construction, and with the strength of intense winds, spread across from building to building.
For the next 10 hours, 130 firefighters tried to put out the fire, which eventually died down at around midnight. After just 30 minutes, it was declared a 9-alarm fire, eventually raising to a 10-alarm fire. The fire department issued a statement saying this blaze is the "largest Cambridge has seen since the 1980s."
The flames ripped through electricity cables, which cause hundreds of buildings to lose power for the majority of the night. These families were only left to seeing and smelling the smoke that engulfed the quiet streets of Cambridge.
As the result of this tragedy, a total of 11 building were damaged from the fire, one of those of which collapsed, In addition to damaged buildings, several cars were damaged as a result of the fire. A total of 60 families were displaced from their homes.
On the bright side, this massive fire resulted in no deaths. There were a couple of minor injuries, but those who were affected have left the medical center in good condition. As the fire Chief puts it, the fact that no one died in a fire this big "is a miracle."
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, the high school that I attended the past 4 years, is serving as a shelter for the families who need shelter. They are encouraging volunteers to help get the family to safety and provide care for them.
Although its the home of Harvard University, Cambridge might not be a very well-known area, so why write about it?
I'm from Cambridge, and to see this news several times on Facebook absolutely breaks my heart. Such a great city does not deserve something like this to happen. I am so happy and relieved no one got seriously hurt or lost their lives, mainly because I personally know a couple of families who were affected by the fire.
My best friend since kindergarten has his apartment building damaged from the flames. Thankfully, the fire didn't reach inside, but he and his family are displaced and now taking shelter away from the area. His cars, on the other hand, suffered some minor injuries. Finding out this news had me very nervous. I was afraid for him and his family, who I also call my family.
I wish I was in Cambridge. It suck being far from home, but knowing they are alright and that the situation could have been much worse, makes me feel a bit better.
It is what it is. Thanks to the firefighters who did all they could to stop the fire, and I will keep the families who lost their homes in my prayers.
