We just finished our first year of marriage! Many people who have been in long marriages may think this isn’t a big feat, but it really was.
Our first year of marriage included:
-Merging our finances
-Both of us switching jobs (AT THE SAME TIME)
-Buying a car
-My husband completing his Master’s in English Literature
-I successfully lost 20 pounds, all in a healthy way
-I started running, actually completed two half marathons
Everyone has said the first year of marriage is hard. It is very hard, it’s a lot of work to step back and think of someone else first. Even if you’ve been dating for a long time, there is still a lot of change. There are no longer excuses for your spending habits, eating habits, your individual choices, etc. It is all on the both of you as a team.
The beauty of this first year was finding how to support my husband financially and emotionally while he worked toward his Master’s. It was filled with times of stress and confusion about what might be coming next, but it was also full of forgiveness and understanding.
We’re headed into this 2nd year of marriage, and I already have to rethink everything as he transitions into finding a real career, and I work back towards some health and financial goals again. I know New Year’s Resolutions are silly, and you can start changing anytime, but the great thing about our marriage is it started on January 1st.
We had a few people tell us that it was silly to be getting married on January 1st, that most people would be hungover or not want to travel that day. I personally fell so in love with the idea of getting married on January 1st. Everyone who wanted to support us was there; it was a true beginning to a new life together.
This is an odd time to be in. I’m reflective on the previous year, but also nervously excited for this New Year. I am trying to be more in the moment, and to stress less. I’ve already failed at that 4 times in the 6 days that the year has brought, but I’m nowhere near perfect.
Marriage is beautiful, and I’m so grateful to have my husband as my best friend and partner for the years to come.
