Marijuana Is Not 'The Devil's Lettuce'

Legalizing it would help our public school systems AND our prison system.

Marijuana. Mary Jane. Dope. Pot. Weed. Ganja. The Devil's lettuce. Although now, in 2017, these words have earned more casual use, as opposed to their previous taboo status, and earn less judgment from people.

The big controversy today is if marijuana should be legalized for recreational and medical use. I say, why not?

I do not see why marijuana is any worse for a person than alcohol is. Alcohol is available for recreational use, even though it makes some people violently ill and can even cause death due to alcohol poisoning.

When has anyone died from marijuana? When has a case of "marijuana poisoning" ever occurred?

I also find it ridiculous that people get arrested for smoking a joint. Why should the citizens of this country, supposedly the land of the free, have to spend their hard-earned money to imprison someone who was merely smoking a joint?

The tax money wasted on incarcerating people convicted of marijuana use could be allocated much more resourcefully, and be beneficial to all. In other states where recreational use of marijuana is legal, such as Colorado, they use their tax money originally used to incarcerate marijuana users to improve their public school system and help the homeless.

America has by far the highest number of incarcerated people worldwide. Our extremely overcrowded prisons would decrease in population size if marijuana were legalized, because the large number of people convicted of marijuana use clog the prison system.

Stories have also been circulating about how marijuana could help those with a serious drug addiction. Lately, our country has had a problem with opioid addiction. It has been noticed that those struggling with opioid addiction turn to marijuana to become "clean" from opioids. According to Rolling Stone, 33,000 Americans died in 2015 from an opioid overdose, while zero overdosed on marijuana.

I am confused as to why people think marijuana is so bad. Is it because it is labeled as a drug? Is it because there is not enough research into it? Or is it because it has always been something we have been told not to do? We are told not to drink too much alcohol or to drink alcohol underage, but we do it anyway. I do agree that there does need to be more research into marijuana, but I believe by no means is it considered "the devil's lettuce".

Times are changing and some people really do need the medical benefits of marijuana. On that note, legalize it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
