As March quickly approaches, March Madness will soon be upon us.
Since I was little, my family always filled out tournament brackets before the madness began. I had no idea which teams were good or that you really can't base who will win each game on their ranking but I still loved filling it out and pretending to talk smack with my dad and brother. I still don't really have an idea of what's going on but it will always be one of my favorite times of the year. Now we have moved on the digital versions of the bracket but the rivalries are still there.
My parents went to a college that used to be a bigger basketball school than it is now (Indiana University) and my brother goes to Duke so we have some serious competition that goes on during March. I miss being able to watch the games together in our living room or even hear my dad yell at the TV when his bracket gets busted. Somehow every year my younger sister and mom who both know the least about college basketball end up having the best bracket. Last year, one of the kids I babysit back home who was about 5 actually just filled out his bracket by which mascot he liked better. It sounds silly but there was a huge upset and he was the only person I knew who had called it.
March Madness is so fun because it brings people together. Sports teams are really amazing because they're so fun to root for and root for with other people. It can unite whole cities with professional sports teams and especially when they win championships everyone rallies behind their players. Whether you're filling out a bracket to win money, a free lunch, or just bragging rights in your family, everyone can get excited about it. You don't need to be an expert on college basketball or even have a favorite team to play and that's what makes it so fun.
Go Nova!!
