Eric Griffin, better known as Marc E. Bassy is R&B’s newest sensation. Repping from the Bay Area of San Francisco, Marc E. Bassy has experienced a long unpredictable career in the music industry. After only a brief stint of college at UC Santa Cruz, Griffin headed south to Los Angeles in 2006 in pursuit of a music career. There he formed a band with his friends, named 2AM Club, paying homage to their favorite bar of the same name in Mimi Valley, California.
With no industry connections, the band had to create their own buzz with live performances at local open mic nights. After various meetings with record labels, the group then signed with RCA Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment in September 2008. Though the group experienced blimps of mainstream exposure with appearances on Good Morning America and a performance spot on ABC’s Pretty Little Liars, they were put on the backburner by their record label and never became a household name. Although they continued to release music each year since they signed to a label back in 2008, they decided to go on a hiatus in 2014. The hiatus allowed Griffin to pursue his solo career, sparking the emergence of Marc E. Bassy, Griffin's rap and R&B alias.
Since the name change, Marc E. Bassy has released a series of projects each year, including his 2014 mixtape Only the Poets and 2015 release East Hollywood, which led to a new record deal with Universal Republic Records. Throughout East Hollywood, Bassy showcases what has become his signature hybrid style, blending both rapping and singing in each track. Fast forward to his newest release, Groovy People EP, which dropped August 5th. Led by the G-Eazy-assisted summer radio hit, "You & Me", this short-lived project is the perfect blend of pop and R&B, that epitomizes summer. Although his genre-bending sound is impelled by a sound reflective of pop, his melodies are what truly stands out in his music. I firmly believe Marc E. Bassy is music's next big thing and that he has the opportunity to become a household name.
Griffin has earned a second chance with his new record deal and he is ready to take over the industry. This time, on his own terms. If you haven't already listened to any of his music, below is the perfect introductory:
