Madness Chapter 3

"First kiss, first fight, first car accident?"

Madness Chapter 3

January 25, 2013

I hate hospitals, they remind me of death and my mother. So imagine my surprise when I awoke in one with no recollection of what happened. A nurse walked as I opened my eyes.

"Oh, you’re awake."

"What’s going on?" the nurse started to talk, but I couldn't hear her. There was this constant buzzing in the back of my head like a swarm of hornets. I hate hornets, they are like my mortal enemy or something ever since fourth grade when I visited my grandmother. She had given me permission to go and play in the backyard, so I played for a little before my attention was caught by something hanging from a tree near the fence. This was before Rick had moved to the suburbs so me being a city kid I did what any city kid would do when confronted with something new.

I threw a hand full of rocks at it, the first couple of times I missed but then I connected and the hive fell to the floor and burst open. A terrible buzz filled the air and then the stinging started. I ran in the house screaming the whole way. Luckily all the windows were closed so not many were able to follow me in. My grandfather dealt with the ones who managed to get in. I spent the next few hours lumpy and in pain, luckily I wasn't allergic or anything but the stings still hurt. I guess it wasn't their fault I mean I did kind of destroy their home. I still hate them though and the noise they make. In fact I hate all insects everything that buzzes and crawls, really bugs me. Bugs me, ha that's a good one.

"And that's what happened, how are you feeling?"

I had completely spaced out on the conversation I could not remember anything she said but I wasn't going to admit it to her, I was ready to leave and black outs were not going to get me home. So I mumbled a reply and she smiled back, then the doctor walked in.

"Hello, how are we today?" I managed to mumble again and the he grinned and looked at the chart. "Well you sir are a very lucky young man. That accident was a serious one, you’re lucky to be alive. As you can see the both of your legs were broken and your left arm was also fractured as was your collar bone nose foot and left eye socket. besides the fractures we can’t see anything else wrong with you, we are just gonna run some test and if every things all clear then we can get you home and back to your life." the doctor smiled again.

I really hate that, how doctors can tell you the worst news but seem to be smiling all the time. I mean seriously why you are grinning at me after telling me I’m broken worse than humpty dumpty. Show some humanity.

They ran the test which ranged from asking if I remember my name and where I lived to following a pen with my eyes, then they put me in a few machines. After it was all done they prescribed me with a plethora of drugs and sent me on my way. The ride home with my step dad was pretty normal he didn't say much after helping from my wheel chair to the car or into the house which wasn't difficult since we had a wheel chair ramp installed for when my grandmother would visit.

"Just call me if you need anything I'll be upstairs."

Want to know a secret? I hate Rick, that's my step dad’s name he's an asshole most of the time and the other half he's gone. I've been stuck with him ever since mom died, I can’t believe that she would make me stay with him but custody was given to him after her death so there wasn't much any one could do.

"OK" I said not looking at him but instead choosing to focus on a fly that found its way into the room. Worst part about being in this freaking chair is I can't even go to my own room if I wanted to, I'm stuck down here in the living room no TV and my phone was lost in the crash. A few minutes passed and I heard Rick coming back downstairs, as he turned the corner I could see he had my TV and laptop in his hands.

"Thought you might want this." he said, as he hooked up the TV and connected the lap top. "Oh and I set up this remote so that it acts as a wireless mouse. And I got a co-worker to lend me his movie stream account so you can watch somethings while your here. It’s not much but it’s something." he said in his Rick way.

OK, OK, I admit it maybe Rick is that bad. I still don't like him though.

The end credits of some anime woke me from my medically induced nap. My head was foggy and my lips chapped. Dry tears cracked on my face, as I yawned my left eye stung. I couldn't believe how beat up I was. The meds kept me sedated enough to not feel the majority of the pain I still had a few aches but nothing to major so why was I crying. Maybe it was the dream I had.

Everything was fuzzy but I could make out most of it, we were in a field there were many people I never met before all gathered sobbing and crying as the casket was lowered into the ground. Rick pushed me away as I cried uncontrollably. A big poster size portrait of Tabatha stood next to the hole in the ground where who I assumed were her sister and fathered huddled in a somber soul shaking embrace. It was the only time I had even thought about Tabatha since I'd been home. The dream was so real no wonder I cried. I reached for my phone to try and call her when someone walked into the room.

"OMG Noah, are you OK, I mean I know you’re not OK but, does it hurt? They said it was bad but I didn't picture this, omg." Her face was filled with relief and concern all at once. She had a few scrapes along her head and her finger was in a splint but besides that she was unscathed. It never fails to confuse me how people can be in a horrible accident and the passenger dies and the drivers always able to walk away. Like here they are just sitting in the passenger seat trusting the driver with their life, then blam! What’s left of them is hauled of in shovels and bags. While the driver who was probably responsible walks away with a couple bruises. Not that this situation is the same or that I want Tabatha to be hurt. It’s just weird is all I'm saying.

"I was just going to call you Tabatha. How’d you get in?" she told me that Rick let her in after they had a conversation about how she was feeling and how I was holding up. She came and sat with me after removing her shoes. There wasn't much room on the couch so she lifted my head and placed it on her lap. Her familiar kitten smell filled my nose, it was the most comfortable I'd felt since the crash. She leaned down and kissed me, she tasted Smokey and earth like. I lifted my good hand up and wrapped it around her head and inhaled more of her. After our impromptu make out session she chose an anime. One of her favorites, we ate popcorn and I ended up falling back into a medically induced nap.

She was humming an unfamiliar tune when I woke up. Still sitting there crossed legged at the edge of the couch. "Are you OK Noah, you were sweating a lot and screaming. Rick and I tried to wake you but you wouldn't so I decided to just sit here and wait until you woke up." It was the dream again, I'm glad the sweat was able to hide the tears I knew had accompanied the shouting.

"I'm fine it's just a nightmare. That I've been having ever since the crash. No biggie." she crawled towards me and propped her head up next to mine. Her eyes gave away her curiosity before she could even ask. “It’s nothing really." she looked at me with those eyes, who did she think she was, trying to con me into giving up my secrets. This mind is like a vault. "OK OK, I keep having this dream that I'm at your funeral and that everyone's crying because you died in that crash." OK, maybe I'm not as god a secret keeper as I thought. She paused for a moment.

"But I didn't now did I? Silly, I'm not in some dirty hole in the ground I'm here with you aren't I" she crawled on top of me careful not to hurt and of my broken places. Her smell waved over me and her body pressed down on me "This is real, not that silly nightmare." She glared at me playfully the kissed me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
