Macklemore has released previous songs about relevant, controversial topics such as gay rights and the Black Lives Matter movement and now he's back at it again by releasing a single about drug addiction.
The opening shot of the video is Macklemore sitting naked in the shower, followed by shots of himself going through what seems to be withdrawal, judging by his blood-shot eyes and sweaty face. The song goes on to talk about how, "They said it wasn't a gateway drug," but now he's hooked on all of these different kinds of drugs, all because his doctor overprescribed him.
"My drug dealer was a doctor, doctor
Had the plug from big pharma, pharma
He said that he would heal me, heal me
But he only gave me problems"
He lists celebrities who have overdosed on drugs before: Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston, Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, Pimp C, Yams and DJ A.M. By listing these celebrities, he's giving us names we recognize, but he follows by saying that it's happening to regular people in the cities and no one understands how bad it really is.
As you can imagine, the song goes on talking about how his addiction to the prescribed drugs progressed into an addiction to other drugs. He ends with the Serenity Prayer: "God, grant me the courage to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference."
Across the United States, especially in my hometown, we've seen an increase in drug overdoses, especially heroin. "Drug Dealer" is much more than just a song. It speaks to everyone affected by drugs on different levels and shows that it affects more people than you think. Drug overdoses only come into the mainstream media when they happen to a celebrity, but it is happening everywhere, and for some of these people, it all started with an addiction to drugs prescribed by doctors.
This widespread addiction is spreading quickly. Just in my hometown alone, heroin overdoses are happening all too often. Macklemore's new release brings this subject into the light, with the hopes that we can turn these addictions around.
