Love Your Melon: Colleges Battling Childhood Cancer

You’ve probably seen the brand “Love Your Melon” talked about on social media or noticed people sporting cute, unique hats around campus. What you might not know is the impact that Love Your Melon has on college campuses across the country, and, more importantly, the big things they are doing for children battling cancer.

Love Your Melon (LYM) is an apparel brand run by college students across the country. Their mission is to give a hat to every child battling cancer in America. Their brand funds cancer research initiatives and provides immediate support for children and their families. LYM has over 45,000 hats reserved for donations, which is enough for every child undergoing cancer treatment. This is only the beginning though, as nearly 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Maggie Allen, Crew Captain of Duquesne’s Love Your Melon Campus Crew, is excited to bring LYM to Duq’s campus. Here’s how it works: whenever someone goes to loveyourmelon.com, purchases any apparel (beanie, shirt, mug etc) and chooses “Duquesne University” at checkout, Duquesne’s LYM Crew receives one credit. The more credits, the more donation events the crew gets to host! The goal of the events is to create amazing experiences for children battling cancer. Duquesne is very, very close to 100 credits! At 100, our Campus Crew will receive a “Superhero Household Visit Kit,” which contains 2 superhero costumes and 5 beanies to donate to a family affected by childhood cancer. The crew will go to the child’s house to surprise the child with costumes and hats.

If you’re interested in supporting a great cause, purchase LYM apparel! Not only will you be sporting cute, comfortable clothing items, you will be changing a child’s life. What’s better than that?! Personally, I am really struck by what Love Your Melon Campus Crews are doing across the country, and I’m even more excited that Duquesne can now contribute! I encourage you to follow the Crew on Facebook (Duquesne Love Your Melon Campus Crew), Instagram (@duqlymcrew) and Twitter (@duqLYMcrew_) to keep up to date with product releases and achievements of The Crew.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
