Open Letter To Myself
Brianta M Diming

We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past. But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.”

I just want to go on record and say you are a very different type of girl. You are not your average 19 year old, you hold a position of management at one of my jobs, and you work in my college’s library, but above all that you are a full time college student that has to work twice as hard as the next student. But under all that you are just Brianta’, the wildcard, the lover, the just one, one that enjoys balance, the different one. At a young age you could tell you were different, you was the tomboy that enjoyed watching The Undertaker give his signature tombstone, or even the hardy boyz and lita (she was YOUR idol lol)with their “extreme’ moves you loved every bit of it and when it came to movies you loved a good scare! You were what most would say is the definition fearless! As you became older you became more fearless! You transferred to a new school in the 7th grade in the peak of puberty, coming from an inner city majority black school like Kozminski in Chicago to a small town “middle school” (I didn’t even know there was a such thing as middle school lol) like Hobart Middle School that was the perfect mixture of all cultures, the difference was implausible. The kids were different, the food was different, even the way teacher taught was different! But even through all this change you are still that same wild-child that I had always been. As high school came around you did started to change, you finally found a voice and became HIGHLY opinionated and not only that you began to learn more about yourself like your strengths and my weaknesses and that the number one weakness was my big heart! It was not long before you had to realize having a big heart was not always a good thing! You felt as though people knew that you had a big heart and they did take advantage but as my junior year came around I became ASERTIVE, confidence at its highest and you refused to be taken for granted or advantage of! You became what most people call a….I think you get the picture, but you just did it to protect yourself. You were still the girl that wanted to be a lover but was no more I was cold in a way, you were Bri, the wild-child, the just one, the fun one, the different one, the cold one. You use to try to please everyone but now you don’t! You have chosen you for the first time and it feels amazing you stand up for what you believe in you never back down from a fight especially when you’re passionate about it! You are the woman that you’ve always wanted to be, you are strong, and not an enabler, you stick up for yourself and others when they can’t do it for themselves you are still that fearless Brianta that you always were you just a lot stronger and I want to tell you LOVE yourself and you are in control never let anyone get you down because when it all fall down you will be on top!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
