Love Your Sisters, Love Your Body, Love Yourself

Every sorority has them. Gym rats, I mean. There are always those girls who absolutely love working out, aren’t afraid to hit the weight room with the guys and plan their days around workouts so that they can stay happy and healthy.  Working out is important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally and emotionally, and can be more fun with you go to work out with your sisters.

One of my sorority sisters in the Pi Phi house, wakes up and goes to the gym at around 6 A.M. every morning. She hits the weight room, and when the weather's nice, goes for runs all the time. I wish I had that kind of drive to work out, but 6 A.M. isn’t really my time of day. Personally, I hate just going out for a run, because I feel like I’m not running towards anything. When I exercise on the elliptical, I can watch my time, distance and set goals for myself. I sometimes see working out as a chore, but it doesn’t have to be.

One of the most fun times I’ve had working out was when my chapter set up a Turbo Kick class with Cardio Uncaged, a new local fitness studio near Foxridge. I knew how much fun it was to work out with my sisters because one year before recruitment, we all took a Zumba class during Spring Week. Doing these classes together made the workout seem like less of a chore, even though different sisters were on different fitness levels.  We were laughing and having fun the whole time, all while getting a great workout and hanging out with each other.

As the semester winds down, the idea of going to the gym can sometimes slip away as your schedule gets busier and busier. For me, it feels like I’ve added a third major just in applying for jobs. My mom always tells me that it’s so important to be healthy mentally, physically and emotionally, and working out regularly can help with this stability.

I know for some people, working out is an escape from a hard day of classes and whatever obstacles life throws at them that day. If you have a close relationship with some of your sisters and usually would talk about your problems, why not get a great workout out of it and let Zumba take some of your stress away!

If you still weren’t crazy about your spring break body, summer is just around the corner. You have plenty of time to get to the body you want, and your sisters can help you do it. If you don’t want to go to a Fitness Studio, gym passes for group fitness classes at McComas and War Memorial Gyms are not super expensive. If yoga is your thing, I’m sure it’s one of your sister’s as well. If you want something more upbeat, try a Zumba class! The options are endless, so don’t knock it until to try it. Both the gym and the weight room aren't scary if you have your sisters by your side.
