Valentine's Day.
This holiday seems to make single people cringe every year. Not me.
If you're like me, you've never had a significant other on Valentine's Day. I prefer to look at it as another one of those commercial holidays where I get to go buy half priced candy the next day. I also enjoy reading the funny online Valentine's Day cards along with the anti-Valentine's Day posts on social media. I also enjoy watching my friends frantically stress over silly decisions like what to wear to dinner with their boyfriend they have been with for four years; while being really grateful that I do not have to worry about that.
One of the best Valentine's Day celebrations I had was when my best friends and I decided to celebrate "Single's Awareness Day" and be one another's Valentine. My Valentine bought me flowers, candy and even paid people to come sing to me in class. We ended the day getting really dressed up and having a double "date" at our favorite Tex-Mex restaurant.
It didn't take a significant other to make me feel like a princess for a day. One of the most rewarding feelings was getting to buy presents for someone else and spending the day with my best friends. One of my friends who participated was in a long distance relationship and it was really special that she chose to spend the day with us instead of being glued to a tiny screen in a five hour Facetime call. It was also very special to know that none of the people I cared about most were sitting at home eating their weight in ice cream and watching the Notebook alone.
You can choose to look at this day as sad or you can choose to look at it as a celebration of love; no matter what that looks like. Chances are, you are loved by so many people. Your friends, parents, pastor, grandparents and even your younger siblings love you deeply. Do something special for them if you don't have a sweetheart. There is never a wrong time to let someone know how much you appreciate them.
Love is one of the most wonderful things that the world has to offer. There definitely has to be something special about it if there are so many people obsessed with it. Celebrate love this February 14th.
