At my university, random roommate assignments are mandatory. Being a teenage girl with needs, that was a big scary red flag for me in my college applications. I know that sounds a bit ridiculous- and it is. I ended up choosing my university regardless, and that has been one of the best choices I've ever made. My summer before moving in was terrifying- simply because I was awaiting my housing assignments and biting my nails at who this new stranger I would be living with would be. "What's her story? What's she like? Oh I sure hope she loves Oreos and Talenti gelato like I do... and God forbid if she doesn't like pink and green", were things I would stay up literally all night thinking about. These were all items of incredible importance. Luckily, most of these have worked out.
My roommate is one of the coolest and most fun people I have ever met. Her favorite colors aren't my favorite colors... but oh man she does love some Talenti gelato and Oreos. We have different interests, but some similar interests too. We never run out of things to talk about. She makes me laugh like no other, and I do the same for her (I mean, not to brag, but I think I'm hilarious). We don't get in each other's way, but we enjoy each other's company. She lets me eat her granola bars, and I let her eat my Cheetos. I mean, we're basically two peas in a pod.
Where I'm going with this is, don't get freaked out by the word 'random.' I understand that some roommate assignments don't go as well as mine, but all of the people I've met have great relationships with theirs too. Having a random roommate has honestly been such a blessing. This person has no idea who you are or where you come from, and you know nothing about them. Getting to know someone so quickly by having to live together is actually really challenging, but so much fun. Honestly, you get to learn so much about yourself in the process. Not to mention, you have someone who is going through the same transition as you and knows the zero people that you do.
So thank you, roommie, for being so awesome. You've become such a close friend to me in the past few weeks, and I'm so lucky to spend my first year of college with you in this tiny shoebox of a dorm. There's a lot ahead of us, and I'm looking forward to every bit of college with you by my side. Thank you for not judging my dance moves, random off-key singing, and constant snacking; thank you for dancing with me, singing with me, and snacking with me.
xoxo,
Your Favorite Roommate
