An Open Letter To My College Roommate.
Sunshine Whispers

An open letter to my future college roommate.

Dear Linsey,

I was so worried about finding a roommate. I spent so much time scrolling up and down on that Facebook page trying to find someone who I thought would be a good fit for me. I was against doing the “random roommate” simply because of the fact that it scared me and I didn’t want to be paired up with someone weird and had nothing in common with. I spent a lot of time talking to girls and getting to know them and eventually I decided to message you. I am so glad that I did! I requested to room with you after we saw just how much we had in common between our love for the same music, our obsession with tea/coffee, our artsy pictures on our Instagrams, our love for adventuring, and how we have so many similar living habits. We also have very similar, but different majors/minors which I thought was awesome.

I am writing you this super weird and awkward public letter because I am bored at this coffee shop (of course) and feel like I should get a few things off my chest. There are things that I want you to know before we start to live with each other in a few weeks.

First off, I have totally stalked you on social media. I mean… who could choose their roommate without looking at a few pics and tweets here and there? So, this being said do not be freaked out if I know something that you haven’t told me yet. I most likely saw it in my endless scrolls when I was showing you off to my friends!

I am a little worried about sharing a room! I have never shared a room before besides at a sleepover with friends at times. So, this is going to be a bit odd for me. I have watched so many tv shows and movies where people who share a room literally divide the room up and threaten each other to stay on their side of the room. I hope that is not how we end up! Hopefully, we can mock together and admire the beautiful cactus lights that you bought while we drink some green tea and continue to procrastinate getting our homework done.

So…I think I should definitely warn you about this one! I love music. Which you are aware of already, but I am not sure if you know just how much I love it. You should prepare yourself for the nights and mornings where I just feel the need for a jam session. Be warned, I cannot sing. Thankfully we have the same music taste, so hopefully, this won't be too much of a problem and hopefully you will even join in! We can have some feels nights where we talk about boys and life problems while listening to some songs that just put us in deep in the feels. I have found it to be great therapy.

Just know that I will always take you up on that late night snack idea and Netflix binge-watching. I will totally not judge your strange late night cravings. I have no interest in gaining the freshman 15, but I will never go all crazy calorie counter on you! Thank goodness we have to walk up four flights of stairs to our room every day to help with that. I am sure that I will be complaining about the stairs after the first few days. I might make some comments on how we need to put a slide or something out of our window so we can just slide right down.

I also feel that I should warn you about something that I am worried about. Missing my family. I haven’t really been away from my family for more than two weeks before so this is going to be quite different for me! Especially, leaving my youngest brother who is one of my best friends even though he is only 8. That is going to be a hard one to be away from. We made these build-a-bears and recorded each other's voices in them so don’t be weirded out when you hear a little boy’s voice saying, “I love you.” It’s just my teddy bear.

I laugh at absolutely everything! Especially after about 11 o’clock. Once 11 hits it is like a switch flips inside of me and everything is 10 times funnier. No idea why this happens but please don’t think I’m crazy when I either start laughing at myself or at something that you said that you thought really wasn't that funny.

I am sure that you have already noticed, but I love taking pictures. I apologize in advance for the constant clicks that come from my camera or my phone. I just love capturing moments, no matter how stupid they may be. Expect to have a ton hanging on the walls! On the subject of our dorm room, since we aren't allowed to paint the walls, I plan on bringing a bunch of posters and pictures and other types of wall decor. I cannot stand the idea of plain, white walls, and I’m guessing, neither can you. So, be sure to bring a bunch too! Also, don’t forget the command strips so we don’t get in trouble for ruining that “beautiful”, dust covered drywall we have to deal with. Room 421 is going to be "lit!"

I cannot wait to spend the year with you. It is going to be crazy and stressful but I already know that it will be so much fun with you by my side. I cannot wait to make memories and mistakes with you, and try to figure out this crazy college thing. I am beyond excited to take dumb pictures, go adventuring, go sledding on the lunch trays, bake cupcakes for people so that they like us, catch Pokemon, and continue to get to know you. After all of the stalking, freaking out about bands, trying to plan the dorm room and the constant coffee pics, I’d say I’m ready for anything that this year holds for us. I cannot wait to be your roommate, your night-out buddy, Netflix and mocking buddy, and more than anything your friend.

Just like you say in your snap chat stories, It’s “summer break day 61.” Only 32 more days until move in day (I thought it was a lot more than this. I legit just spit out my coffee) and I’m so excited for this journey and I hope you are too! We still haven't met in person, but I already know that I am going to love you!

Love,

Your future roommate, Corbyn.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
