Look at this picture, and ask yourself what you see. It’s nearly impossible to determine the gender of each just by looking at them, nor can you deduce their race. You know absolutely nothing, besides the fact that the picture shows one universal idea, love. It’s the simplicity of the of the connection and beauty of two human beings shared that is the only thing revealed in this picture, that is of true matter.
Gay marriage rights. It’s one of the most controversial topics in today’s day and age amongst our generation. Is it right? Is it wrong? Anti-gay right supporters would describe it as against the ways of god’s creation, immoral, abnormal, and “not actually love”. However, I would like to object. This is where I stand in the controversial world of gay marriage rights…
If I had to remember the first time my mom and I discussed gay marriage rights, it would be recollected as one of the most awkward moments I’ve faced. Normally, I’ve always shared the same opinions with my parents on debatable topics, such as abortion rights and gun control. However, for the first time I found a new voice inside myself disagreeing. “It’s not the way god made things” she said. My mom would go on about how children need a mother and a father, and that gay marriage is immoral in every sense. But then it finally became my turn to speak, and what I said went a little something like this-
Yes, the traditional sense of marriage has always been between a man and a women, but denying one of the option to marry is discriminatory. It creates another class of people in society, and those who are being treating without dignity and unworthy of participating in one of the fundamental institutions of today’s culture. The gay marriage is protected by the US constitution's phrase of “liberty and equality”. Our world today is constantly changing, moving, and growing just like our ideas and beliefs are, therefore nothing will ever stay exactly the same. This includes marriage. The traditional concept has changed over time, and saying that marriage is only between a man and a women is deemed as historically inaccurate. In response to the point “marriage is for procreation. Homosexual couples cannot have children” I would like to say that statement is inaccurate and considered wrong. No, marriage is not only for procreation, otherwise infertile couples or weddings between men and women who do not wish to have children would’ve been prevented from marrying. And for those who would like to argue that gay couples do not make good parents, your point is also invalid. If anything, the children raised by these couples will grow up to be more accepting and open minded of different values, beliefs, and ways of life. My last argument happens to be the biggest reason why many object the idea of same sex marriage- god and religion. However, my true belief is god supports all kinds of love. In holy scripture, it has been stated multiple times that “wherever love is, god is also”. God will never want discrimination and loss of dignity amongst his children, if anything he would want equality and acceptance for all.
In every sense gay marriage is acceptable. The individuality of one doesn't mean they don't get a chance to live their life. No matter the gender, love is still love, and marriage is still a human right. That’s my stand.
