Why I Love Kappa Phi, And You Will Too!
Alexa Willis

I am a proud member of the Kappa Phi club, a national organization for women. It began in 1915 as a Sunday School for Women, but has grown into a full blown national organization of college women.

I stumbled upon Kappa Phi purely by accident, but I would not trade that accident for the world, and here's why:

1. I am a part of a sisterhood across generations.

While we are inducted to Kappa Phi as college women, it is an organization that keeps in touch with their alumni. It has helped me make connections I would have never made otherwise with women older and more experienced, from general life problems to my major.

2. Our small chapter is my big family.

I won't deny, my chapter isn't huge. But I love every single one of them. I don't take calling them my sister lightly! They are the type of family I would choose.

3. I still get a Big! (And Littles!)

A lot of people think that because we aren't a 'real' sorority, we don't have Bigs, Littles, or families. I am a proud member of my family, with an amazing big and the best littles I could have ever asked for!

4. It's where I made some of my truest and best friendships.

My first recruitment activity, I met one of my best friends. And I can promise that some of my sisters will be standing beside me at my wedding. They have supported me through hard times, and celebrated with me in the good times.

5. It gives me a creative outlet.

The good thing about an all girls organization- crafting. We have made decorations for our events, crafts for bigs and littles, and service crafts to decorate nursing homes. I've written letters of encouragement, and planned formals. This is my creative outlet at college, and I get to see all of its rewards!

6. It gives me a support system.

When family emergencies or hard financial situations occur, my sisterhood was always there to lift me up.

7. I can still Go Greek if I want to.

KPhi may have greek letter, but that is the extent of our affiliation. We identify as a club, not a sorority, so if you wanted, you could still rush for a sorority!

8. The connections you make.

I cannot tell you how many situations I have been in where someone has recognized my letter on my bag or tshirt and started talking about when they were a Kappa Phi! Even some ladies from my tiny hometown are sisters!

9. It gives me an opportunity to serve.

Service is one of our pillars, and therefore we have a lot of opportunities to serve the community and even the world around us!

10. Traditions.

When you join Kappa Phi, you become a part of traditions that have been happening for decades- and even get the opportunity to start your own traditions!

11. Everyone is included.

You don't have to be a certain branch on the Christianity tree to feel at home here- we are non-denominational, and we all love and support each others beliefs and differences.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
