L-O-V-E. It's a four letter word that's been in our vocabulary since the beginning. It's what we say to people we truly care about. It's what we feel. It's more than a concept or idea, it's a feeling and a strong one at that. Yet in light of recent tragedies one has to wonder: have we forgotten how to love?
This past week has been nothing but a numbers game. Two black men killed, five officers killed, two officers shot, one lone gunman. But notice that when we talk of supporters and peaceful protesters who lined the streets, gave condolences and hugs and brought flowers and notes to all those affected, there is no number because there isn't a number for it. Love is infinite.
The way people have come together to show kindness and support without taking sides is real love. Love does not discriminate, it does not dictate that anyone is undeserving and it is one resource we can never run out of. As I watch the nightly news or read recent reports, I find myself disappointed at how people are under the incredibly mistaken impression that we need to take sides. There are no sides in matters like this. People have been wrongly shot and killed and that's all there is to it.
Think about it. All the victims were people. They were all human. All of them had families, friends and lives to live. But they all had something else in common. They loved and they are loved. Love, it's amazing how it pops up everywhere you go. Love is one of the most common things we share and for an infinite resource we use so very little of it.
To those who are fighting against family members and friends, arguing over who was right and who was wrong, STOP! Listen to yourselves and look at what you've become. There's already more than enough hatred in the world, why add fuel to the fire? Why would you dare spread such hatred to the people that you love? Once again there it is, love. All this arguing and fighting is no way to solve the problems we have now. What's worse is I see this among my generation, the one that was supposed to make things better.
I look at my generation and I am disappointed that so many of us just a few years ago would have never acted in such a disgraceful manner. Have we learned nothing? We were the generation that wanted love and peace not war and hatred, but look at what we've done. The past generation may have started this mess but we were the ones who were supposed to see the mistakes made and start making it better. Shame on us.
Have we truly forgotten how to love our fellow man as we are blinded by our own hatred and fear? It seems we have. We feared monsters under the bed as children and as adults we have become the monster we fear. But there is hope. The answer to fixing this is simple as it has always been: love. Love is always there, it never left us. Love in its own way is the most powerful force in the universe. Its strength is immeasurable, it's power is unparalleled.
Love is infinite and can never be destroyed.
