Love Your Body

Stop the shame

Love Your Body
Laura Cohen

I hear it every day. Most people don't know that they're even doing it or realize what they are saying, but I hear body shamming every single day. I am not innocent either, I've had my fair share of complaints about my appearance. It is time to break free of that. It is so easy to get down on yourself, but there is so much more than physical appearance. Your intelligence, sense of humor, work ethic, how you treat others, happiness, and so much more are far more important than physical appearance. There are so many amazing ways to take care of and love your body:

1. Take a hike

Enjoy nature, breathe a deep breath of fresh air, and appreciate what your legs can do for you.

2. Find a form of exercise you enjoy

Whether its walking, running, biking, or lifting weights, there is something out there for everyone. Find what you love and do it, in moderation of course. There is no need to go crazy with exercise.

3. Thank your body every night

Reflect on your day. Recognize how far you traveled, what you wrote, what you made for dinner, all of the incredible things your body does for you. It deserves a good thank you.

4. Get sleep

Your body works so hard all day to keep you up and moving, it needs a break and so do you! Make sure you rest.

5. Make a list of things you love about your body

It could be your eyes, your legs, your hair, whatever it may be: write it down. And keep adding to it.

6. Write an inspirational message on your mirror

Every morning you get ready and every last minute look you give yourself you'll see this message and feel great about yourself.

7. Get rid of anything that doesn't fit or make you feel good

Stop keeping it in your closet, it is taking up space for something you look amazing in.

8. Listen to your body

Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired, drink when you are thirsty. Your body knows what it needs.

People get so down on themselves and forget how many wonderful things their body does for them. A little extra weight doesn't impair anything from this list. It is time to stop the shame and start the love. You look wonderful!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
