When Childhood Meant Simpler Times

Everything just seems much more complicated now.

I remember bright sunny spring mornings, daydreaming about the morning ahead of me. After my mom was ready, I would skip holding my mother’s hand begging her to hurry as we sprinted to the swing set. I would tip the swing upside down to avoid getting my pants all wet. Then, I would jump onto the swing and kick my legs as hard and fast as I could. I enjoyed watching the birds fly and hear the other children scream with delight.

Also, I remember fun summer days with friends, swimming in the pool and enjoying popsicles. My friends and I would walk through the mall with my mom in a store nearby, but we felt like big kids being allowed to shop without an adult. I also remember summer days I spent with friends in our backyard eating popsicles and jumping off the diving board. I always thought the summer was worry-free.

Finally, my favorite childhood memory is traveling with my family. I would jump out of bed at 5 a.m. to my alarm clock, merely because I could never sleep the night before. I would throw my clothes on, brush my teeth in thirty seconds and run to my mom’s bathroom brush in hand. I anxiously waited for her to do my hair, with my father’s voice echoing in my mind, “If you are not in the car we will leave without you.” Once my mom finished my hair, which felt like it took FOREVER, but really only took a minute or two. I would dash to the kitchen to get the strawberries and yogurt to eat in the car. I then grabbed by backpack and hopped into the backseat with my brother and waited for my parents.

Sometimes, I like to think back to these childhood memories. The simplicity of life then seems so unreal now that I'm older.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
