If you've ever heard anything about long distance relationships, specifically when you're in college, it's probably that they are bad and never end well. If you're like me, you choose not to believe that nothing good comes out of a long distance relationship, probably because you're in one. Although it can get really difficult being away from a significant other for a prolonged period of time, there are some upsides to being at different schools. Are long distance relationships more work? Definitely, but are they doable and worth it? Of course.
1. You get more work done.
Not being able to spend time with your significant other means more time to watch Netflix do all of the homework, projects, and papers you're bound to have.
2. You make your own group of friends.
You won't be able to always hang out with your significant other and the friends you may share, so being at different schools allows you to find a group of people you really connect with, and if you and your SO happen to break up, you'll still have your group of friends.
3. The time you spend together is that much sweeter.
Whether you're going to visit your significant other or vice versa, seeing them again feels like a special event, and you'll probably treat it as such.
4. You get to make sure they're who you want to be with.
Being away from your significant other at a school filled with people your age allows you to reevaluate what you want in a relationship and if the person you're dating fits that criteria.
5. You get to appreciate what you have.
Not everyone you meet in college will be a good person. Seeing these people and hearing about bad experiences during dates or parties allows you to appreciate your significant other that much more.
6. You're less distracted.
Your SO won't be hanging around to distract you from going to class or doing work.
7. You don't have to worry about STDs
You never know what could be lurking during a one-night-stand.
8. Or pregnancy
(but make sure you're staying safe when you're together!)
9. Your communication improves
When you're apart, your relationship depends on your phone/computer. When your communication is done solely through technology, you learn how to communicate better with one another.
10. You don't have to worry about guys/girls.
You don't have to worry about impressing any potential suitors because you've already got someone.
11. There's no competing.
You don't have to worry about fighting over the same guy/girl with anyone.
12. You don't have to experience the walk of shame.
No one-night-stands equals no walks of shame. Sounds good enough to me.
