Five Local Bands You Should Be Listening To

1. Brick + Mortar

The first time I heard Brick + Mortar was last September at a Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party show. The rain was pouring down; everyone was miserable and Brick + Mortar was the opening act. Nobody knew who they were, but as soon as they started playing they stole the stage, and for a moment we were taken by the music. Brick + Mortar’s sound was so unique that everyone in the audience was fascinated by it. We didn’t know who this band was, and we sure didn’t know the words, but we were mesmerized by the indie rock sound. And when it was over, we wanted to know more about this Toms River, NJ band.

2. Summer Scouts

Summer Scouts is a band that is comparable to Grouplove or Two Door Cinema Club, but one major difference is that they've got local roots. This five-piece act is from Allentown, PA. Their sound is so different that it is hard to put into words, but they claim to be “an eclectic mix of pop sensibilities with a tinge of post-rock dynamics.” Their latest album was just released on August 1st and it’s definitely worth checking out.

3. Above the Mendoza

This five-man group from Philadelphia has that classic punk-rock sound. Their songs are easy to listen to and they have some great lyrics. If you like 'A Day to Remember,' you’ll like them. I recommend checking out the song “Home”, which has some great lyrics that will take you back to Philadelphia. The video is really awesome too, as it shoots Philadelphia from a bird’s eye view.

4. The Districts

This band, originating from Lilitz, has already achieved so much success and they’re not even old enough to celebrate with a drink. Their sound is a mix of rock, country, and folk. If you ask me, they sound a bit like Dr. Dog. They’ve been featured in Spin Magazine and have played at Bonnaroo and Lollapaloo… so why aren’t they a household name yet?

5. Ju- Taun

Although this trio has been playing together for fifteen years, they are just now becoming recognized in the form of national TV and the radio. Hailing from Camden, NJ, Ju-Taun’s sound is a mix of folk, R&B, rock, and blues. They are often compared to The Temptations. Their captivating sound has drawn in a strong fan base. You can see them live on September 12th in Philadelphia at Dave and Buster’s Dockside Bar.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
