5 New Singles To Rock Out To This Summer
Kate Meyrick

Great music is all around us, which can be awesome and overwhelming at the same time. The “rock” genre has become so diversified that it’s almost impossible to place some of your favorite artists within a distinct sound, and I chose these songs because of their unique lyrics, fun beats and interesting combos. But most of all, I loved these songs because of the message they put across: make mistakes, ask forgiveness, have fun and live with purpose. Here are 5 singles that dropped this week (or earlier in the summer) that have been on repeat with the windows down, the Ray-Bans on and the dance moves on fleek.

1. NEEDTOBREATHE - "GREAT NIGHT (feat. Shovels and Rope)"

If you are in the Chicago area on October 30th, these dudes will be at the Aragon Ballroom along with Welshly Arms and Mat Kearney on their annual “Tour DeCompadres” show. I’ll be there somewhere in the front, rocking out to this song. Going back to their Southern roots, the Rinehart brothers bring in harsh electrics and stomping bass drums and mix it all together to deliver something I can only place as outlaw dance music. Sick.

2. Switchfoot - "Bull In A China Shop"

The Southern California natives that defined our childhood are about to drop their 10th studio album, and this is the newest single which reflects their new sound (cool time signatures that mess with your rhythm) and their classic alt rock roots (crackly guitars and awesome live-life-loud lyrics). “I wanna rock this block like a bull in a China shop.”

3. COIN - "Talk Too Much"

Somewhere between the pop lyrics and catchy melody, COIN throws in a guitar solo reminiscent of Walk the Moon and uses 80s synth beats to deliver an awesome feel-good dance song that’s flirty, fun and oh-so-relatable. Their second album will be coming out later in the fall, so listen to their self-titled release (and this single) to get a feel for what their new sound will be like.

4. Colony House - "You Know It"

I knew these guys when they were called “Caleb” and only had one EP out. The sons of Christian Pop king Steven Curtis Chapman have made waves the past year: releasing their album “When I Was Younger,” performing on CONAN and touring in Europe and the United States. Their new single reflects the band’s return to rock and roll roots. Think Tom Petty and Roy Orbison (they are naming their new album “Only the Lonely”). Beachy vibes and a San Francisco road trip make this song an instant classic.

5. Relient K - "Bummin’"

Hello middle school! Your favorite angsty-but-squeaky-clean-punk-rock-pop band is back with a new album this summer! Their first single is everything you could hope for: Matt Theissen’s never-aging vocals, head-banging guitar and fun but heartfelt lyrics that remind you to get off the couch and stop being a bum—live the life you’ve been given with purpose and a dose of humility and heart.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Sister | Brother Style - Word Press

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
