Living With Chronic Pain, From The Girl Who Has Tried Everything

To the person who has tried everything, do not lose hope. Trust me, I know that chronic pain controls your life. I know that it dominates every part of your day. I know that it hurts. I know. But listen well, my comrade in pain…you are not alone. There are people in your life that would give anything to see you feel better. These people are your support system. They are your family, and they are your friends. So take comfort in the fact that you are not alone.

To the person who has tried everything…you have not tried everything. It may be annoying to hear this fact time after time, but it is true. Therefore, do not give up. Do not settle on the idea that you will be in pain forever. There are things that will ease your discomfort, whether it be a massage, medication, or even meditation, your pain can be eased.

To the person who has tried everything, follow through with every thing. If you go to a doctor, listen to what they have to say. If you go to a physical therapist, DO THE EXCERCISES. If you are told something by someone with knowledge about your pain, at least give their suggestion a go. Do not simply try this remedy one or two times. Give the medicine or exercises enough time to see if they actually work. If you never try, you will never know.

To the person who has tried everything, listen to your gut. You are the only person who knows exactly how you are feeling. Speak clearly to your doctors, and do not let them put words into your mouth. If you think some medicine would not work, let them know. It is your body. It is your pain. To the person who has tried everything, try happiness. Do what you love, and be with who you love. You will find that when you are busy doing things that fill your heart with joy, that it is hard to focus on the negatives. Never let the pain win.

To the person who has tried everything, from a person who has tried many things, do not lose sight of the little things in life because of this big thing in your life. Live life to the fullest. Live with no regrets. I have found that once I stopped letting my chronic pain control my life, I was able to actually live. Chronic pain is a part of you, but do not let it define you. "You," are strong, "you" are courageous, and "you" will kick chronic pain’s butt, one day. So, never lose faith. You've got this. I believe in you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
