I Live Behind the Lens of a Camera

No, please don't take my picture. I'll take yours though.

I Live Behind the Lens of a Camera
Michaela Macquignon

There are many people who loved to be photographed and you can find millions of pictures of them on their phone or computers. That is perfectly fine, and I encourage that. I love people who love themselves so much that they crave having permanent artifacts of them being alive in this moment in time. There is something amazing about being able to photograph people and capture their pure and raw beauty. I thrive off of this, I thrive off of experiencing the people that love feeling beautiful and showing off that beauty. I love bringing out that beauty more than they thought could be possible.

Many people ask me why I take so many pictures and how I can be happy not being in many. Don't get me wrong, I love being in pictures. I love having these pieces of metallic paper that portray my life experiences across them. Pictures are truly worth a thousand words and I love being able to show off my life to people without having to tell them about it. Being a photographer does not mean I don't love being in pictures, it just means that I can define my life by the pictures I take as well.

The whole point of photography is to capture the beauty of life in a way that you wouldn't be able to see it originally. Photographers have an eye for this, an eye for capturing life in a way that will always make it beautiful. As a photographer you need to see when people are being their most beautiful. All photographers see beauty clearly. It is something that cannot be covered over when you have the knack, but the hard part is capturing the beautiful.

When people see a camera they become rigid and posed. That is why it is difficult to capture the pure beauty. Many photographers enjoy posed pictures, everyone has their own technique. I prefer candid photos. I prefer photographs in which you can learn something about the person by just looking at them. I like seeing the scars, the imperfections, the person as they truly are. I prefer seeing the love shine through people's faces when they are with their partner. I want to see the unfiltered emotion that people are feeling. I want others to be able to experience that emotion as they are looking at the photos.

I live behind the lends of a camera to be able to people other people's stories. I live behind the lens of a camera to be able to find the beauty in people they may not see for themselves. I live behind the lens of a camera to capture life and the emotions that are felt throughout life. I live behind the lens of the camera so that other people can have permanent memories.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
