Most people want to have a significant other at some point in their life. I would say, high schooler me, was very different from who I am now.
Back in the day, I wanted to have a boyfriend so bad. I thought all my problems would magically go away if I did. I had a few relationships here and there, but they never turned out the way I imagined it would be. They would either be too immature for my liking or we would rush into a relationship before I was 100% sure I really liked them. At the time, I didn’t really care. I searched till I found someone who was interested in dating, because in high school, finding someone who wanted a serious relationship was like finding a rare diamond among coal.
Don’t be fooled, finding someone who wants a serious relationship in college is just as hard. Especially as an underclassmen; people just want to have fun, party, and live up the “college experience”. That’s when I came to the conclusion, why wait around for someone when you can be living a none worrisome life?
It’s kind of like Field of Dreams quote, “If you build it, he will come.” Build a life that you want for yourself and soon people will see your life appealing, making you more attractive.
This article is not on how to get a boyfriend or girlfriend, but a piece on discovery. It’s been three weeks into school and I have heard countless times from friends and peers, “I want to have a boyfriend.” I tell them that eventually the right person will come along, but then I usually hear the comeback, “Well that’s easy for you to say, you have a boyfriend!” That’s true, I am in a relationship but I also told myself once I entered college that I’m done trying to get someone to date me. If I meet someone, that’s great! But if I don’t, I can have a very enjoyable life because I’m a strong independent woman who doesn’t need a man. I believe women don’t need a man to make themselves happy. In this country, women should be in a relationship because they want to and that special someone is truly special.
For the first time in my life, I am in a relationship with someone who I’m 100% sure about dating. This is also the first relationship I’ve been in since I’ve lived with the going with the flow motto within dating. I thought my boyfriend was attractive, we had a class together, we enjoyed each other’s company, and now we’ve been dating for 9 months.
Being in a relationship or not, I hope men and women can live happily without obsessing over needing someone to feel complete. Being happy is an attractive trait. You may hear this a lot in life, but “to love someone, you need to love yourself first.”
So go out you youthful people and live for yourself. Be happy to be alone. Be happy to be with others. If anything, just love.
