Thanksgiving gives us a chance to be thankful. However why should that thanks be reserved for just one day out of the year? Shouldn't we be thankful everyday? Well truthfully many of us are but we choose one day out of the year to say it out loud.
Everyone has their own traditions for the holiday. Some pray, some just go around the table and say what they're thankful for and some just dig right into the food--a sort of silent thank you to the cook.
If you ask someone what they're thankful for the most common answers you're bound to receive are family, friends, and food. Then there's some less common answers like a job, your pet or just getting the day off.
Now like many I shared my own personal thanks on social media citing my family and friends as the top of my thankful list but when I really thought about it there were small things I was thankful for too and take for granted.
It is important to be thankful for the people in your life, goodness knows I am. But there's always the little things you may not even think about. Here's a small personal list of things I'm thankful for, maybe you share some of these things too.
1. The birds that sing:
Yes cheesy as it may sound and even though it's winter, I'm grateful we have birds of different varieties that sing, sometimes when you're having a bad day a little bird song could be just the medicine you need.
2. Warm blankets:
Since winter hit the thing I've been cuddling and thanking the most is my fuzzy blanket. It soft and comfortable and best of all keeps me warm on those cold nights.
3. Kindness:
This is a big one for me seeing as there's already so much hate in the world. A little kindness goes a long way, even just smiling at a stranger makes things better. As it is kindness will always be welcomed and appreciated especially when everyone else wastes time and energy hating each other.
4. Cartoons:
Might sound silly but laughter is the best medicine and what better way than to sit back and enjoy some of your favorite cartoons. Personally I like the old school cartoons from the '80's to the early '00's although there have been a few good cartoons in recent years too. Every once in a while you just need to watch something silly.
Of course there's many other things I could have added but I did say it was a small list. When you think about it there's a lot to be thankful for. Since Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is coming up here's another chance to say what you're thankful for.
So next time someone asks what you're thankful for don't hesitate to think outside the box and say something different.
