It's that time of the year again, where everyone shares what they are thankful for. Even though we should be thankful every day, this month truly brings out everyone's softer side. From the Facebook posts of people constantly reminding everyone else what they are thankful for, to Thanksgiving day when everyone sits around the table and does the same — it's the season of thankfulness and everyone wants you to know. There are many things to be thankful for — actually, we should be thankful for everything in our lives — but there are definitely some things that might get overlooked this holiday season. Don't worry, though - I am here to make sure you remember the little things in life that really matter.
1. Your Bed
I know that probably sounds silly, "like really, my bed?" Yes, your bed. Why? Because there are millions of people in this world that are not as fortunate as you are to have that bed from Pottery Barn or Ikea with the memory foam mattress topper. Think about it: we are spoiled.
2. Your Clothes
We are so fortunate to have the freedom to be able to go buy the clothes that we want and that we have the freedom to wear them whenever and wherever. We tend to take this for granted. We walk into our closets and get so frustrated because we "have nothing to wear," but that is far from true.
3. Your Transportation
Whether you get around by car, bus or bike — be thankful. There are many places in this world where their only option to get from point A to point B is by walking there, no matter how long it will take them. I know I am guilty of it, but be thankful for the car that you have and stop comparing it to all of the others around you. You are so fortunate.
4. Your Food
It seems like we have become a generation of food critics. From going to nice restaurants to a home-cooked meal, it's like nothing is ever good enough. If you have ever been to another country then you will understand how lucky we truly are. We can have anything we want when we want it. And it can most likely be delivered to your house or you don't even have to get out of the car for it.
5. Your Job
I can't tell you how many times I have complained about a job. I still do it even though I am lucky enough to have a job that pays me decently and allows me to have an income. What we don't think about though is all the people who physically can't work or truly want to but aren't being hired. Yet here we are, sitting at work constantly complaining about every little thing. We should be more thankful that someone was willing to take a chance on us and they are practically paying our bills for us.
6. Your Education
This is definitely something that is often overlooked. We are constantly swamped with homework or studying and we forget to be thankful that we are lucky enough to be getting an education. Not only are we lucky to be getting an education but we are lucky to be getting a chance to further ourselves for our future. It's not easy but there are plenty of people out there that would gladly take your place, so sit back for a second and be grateful that you are constantly stressed and always studying.
7. Social Media
I know this sounds weird: be thankful for social media? Yes. We are so lucky to have the ability to connect with people all over the world, to constantly know what is happening and get everything at the tips of our fingers. Social media can definitely be negative at times, but think about it: because of social media, we are constantly in the know about the major events around the world. I know that personally, I see my news on Twitter or Facebook before I will on TV.
8. Your Pets
You might not realize it, but pets are such a special gift. They bring so much joy and happiness to our lives. We also are so fortunate to have the ability to have pets, because some people aren't that lucky. I can honestly say that if I didn't have my pets, I would be a different person. Here's to our pets!
9. Your Time
There are so many moments where we complain about being bored or not having something to do, but we truly don't realize how good we have it. Time is precious and we should be thankful for every moment that we get.
10. Life And Those Around You
We all need to be so incredibly thankful for waking up this morning and being blessed with yet another day to live. We often don't go about our days thanking those in our lives for being so important. We should though because life is short, and in any moment it could be too late. Go through your days being thankful for your family and friends and getting another day to show your beauty.
These aren't the only things that we need to be thankful for. We should be thankful for every little thing in our lives. In light of everything going on in the world around us, whether it's in your backyard or something you are just seeing on television, be gracious. Hug the ones you love a little tighter, call your family, spend time with friends and put your all into your relationships. The days are short and I know that I don't want to look back and regret a single one.
Happy Thanksgiving!
