I've always been a "football-watching" kind of gal.
A lot of it comes from my dad and his love for the game. I've never seen anyone be able to talk plays, new recruits, coaching, and team match-ups like he can. If he hadn't followed his love of cattle ranching for a career, I'm almost positive he would have found his way into coaching football.
The fall season in our family's household means football is always on the T.V.
A few weeks ago, I came in late from a long day of shopping to find my dad tuned in to the 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction. I plopped myself down on the couch just as owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones was being presented for induction and about to give his speech.
Now I must say that we are big Cowboy fans and nothing gets us more fired up than a trip to Jerry's world. So, of course, my whole family gathered into the living room to hear what Mr. Jones had to say about his experiences owning one of the most successful pro football franchises of all time.
With a captivating stage presence, and spunky, charismatic wit, I believe Jones delivered a phenomenal speech. Not to mention he included many valuable life lessons that any individual can grow from and be challenged by.
Here are four motivational things I took away from his speech.
1. For one to be successful, they must surround themselves with a successful team of talented, passionate, driven, and supportive individuals.
Jones named off a list of people including Jimmy Johnson, Tony Romo, Michael Irving, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Barry Switzer, and other friends and family members that greatly contributed to the success of the Dallas Cowboys and helped him achieve the goals and visions he set forth for the team. This is a humbling reminder that huge successes are achieved by the efforts of many. Surround yourself with people who will be your team; those who will fight alongside you and cheer you on till the clock runs out.
2. Keep on keeping on.
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. When discussing the overwhelming pressures and responsibilities Jones faced as a new owner of the cowboys, he said he did what all football players know how to do in the face of a challenge- "[they] tighten that chin strap and keep on keeping on." They "don't run around the block" yet instead, face their fears head on. This reminds us to never back down or give up when circumstances get difficult.
3. Never settle for second best.
Jones talked about how he comes from a family of entrepreneurs. His parents instilled into him the passion and desire to achieve prosperity and nothing less. He was always looking for ways to improve and become even better- whether it was on the football field playing college ball or in the business world. This reminds us to never settle for anything less than our best, and to always push ourselves to go even deeper, higher, or farther in our own life pursuits.
4. Smile within the face of adversity.
These words were used by Jones to describe the character of Dallas cowboy legend and wide receiver, Michael Irvin. Jones said he was always amazed and encouraged by Irvin's ability to stay positive amidst tough situations. "The rougher it was, the louder he laughed", Jones complimented. This teaches us to approach hardships with a more positive attitude and to view them as an opportunity to grow and learn.
I am thankful that my dad's love and knowledge of football has been passed down to me. We've shared many fun times and memories watching exciting college and pro football games together.
Thanks dad for teaching me the rules of the game and thanks Mr. Jones for teaching me a few life lessons I can throw in there too.
Gig'em and Go Cowboys!
