My Life as a Music Major

My Life as a Music Major

If High School Musical grew up and had more stress, it would be a college fine arts major. It's a lot of hard work and practice, and sometimes it feels like it's not worth it. But it is. It is so worth the stress to pursue something you love. It is so worth the heartache to turn a passion into a career. Every major has its pros and cons, but if you're considering a fine arts degree, I hope you go for it. It was the best decision I ever made.

Pro: You're doing what you love

One of the best feelings in the world is taking one of your passions and turning it into a degree. Instead of letting the music end after high school, I decided to make it my major!

Con: You deal with a lot of criticism

Pursuing a degree in the arts can really take a toll on your confidence every once in a while. You're constantly listening to professors tell you how to be better. It can be really hard to take the criticism and just move on.

Pro: You meet so many people that share your passion

Fine arts programs at many universities aren't very big, so you get to have your own little fine arts family. In a big and scary university, you always have people to talk to that understand exactly what you're going through.

Con: It can be very competitive

While it's nice to be friends with other fine arts majors, it can be a little scary. You're constantly comparing yourself to others. Who's getting that solo? Who's getting featured on this? These thoughts come up frequently.

Pro: You develop great relationships with your professors

Over 4 years, music majors become very close with their professors. You see them at least twice a week for 4 years. They see you at your worst, and they guide you to your best. They are one of the most consistent parts of college.

Con: Juries are awful

Jury exams happen every semester, and I'll be straightforward: they suck. It's the most stressful time of the year. All of your lessons and preparations go into one 10-minute assessment. And they get worse every year.

Pro: You grow more as a person than you ever thought possible

Yes, being a fine arts major has its ups and downs. But overall, it's the most rewarding experience. I have learned how to handle criticism, how to make my time more valuable, and how to take life one day at a time. Becoming a music major was a big risk, but it was the best decision I've ever made.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
