It’s May, finally, which means that summer is almost here for those of us in college. It’s so close -- I can almost see the light! (Or sunlight -- ha!) And while that means that our semester is almost over and we can almost start enjoying the summer of 2016, it also means we are up to our eyeballs in schoolwork. There are papers and projects and tests galore, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably freaking the freak out. So here’s a letter to all of you who may need a little bit of a pep-talk (and not just the type of pep talk from your parents telling you that you better be getting As).
Dear college student on the verge of a mental breakdown,
First of all, I know how you feel. And not just in that way where someone tells you they know how you feel, but they actually don’t. I actually know how you feel, because I’ve been there. In fact, I am there. Right now. I’m stressing out, I’m exhausted 24/7, and I have way more to do than I have time to do it. I barely have time to be writing this, if I’m being honest. But I’m here to tell you that it’s going to be OK.
Some of you may be thinking: “Yeah right, it is not going to be OK!” And all right, you’re being a little bit dramatic, let’s be real. I know that there’s a lot of work to do, and I know that you’re getting no sleep, and I know it seems impossible to get it all done in the time you have left this semester (trust me — I know, I feel all those things too). But you only have a little bit left to go (I actually only have one week left to go), and then it will be over. The projects will be submitted, the tests will be finished, and the essays will be done. And even if you don’t get the grade you wanted, or your group project may have been a failure because your group members left you with the entire load, but it will be over, and it will be fine.
I’ve had many mental breakdowns in my educational career (in fact, I might be having one right now), and I can honestly say I can’t wait until this semester is over. So take a deep breath, eat a cookie (or 12), and count down the days until you’re finally done and summer is finally here (10 days).
