Dear Next Girlfriend,
When I talk to people about relationships, some say they were fine but just didn't work out. Others say it was one of the best choices of their life to start talking to that oh-so-special person. However, the answer I most commonly hear is that it was the worst experience of their life.
The majority of the people I talk to say they could do without that one relationship that messed them up in the head, and for them, I'm sorry. But I can tell you myself that if you were with me, I would try and fix your broken wounds. This letter is for my next girlfriend.
I'm sorry I couldn't come into your life early enough and give you the world that you deserve, or I'm sorry it took me so long to build up the courage to ask you out on our first date. I want to listen about your hurt past that you have trouble speaking about. I'm sorry that I made you waste your time on that not-so-great person you think left you as damaged goods. I would just like to say that you are fresh fruit that has been waiting to be picked by the right person and that no matter what you have been through, I am here for you. I see you for who you truly are and never want to change your imperfections — or your perfect smile that I'll get to look at for the rest of my life.
I want you to know that I can't wait to hear about your day every night even if it's just about you cuddling with the dog and watching the Food Network. I want to hold your hand during that PG-13 scary movie you seem to think is rated R. I want to be able to save your long gray days and give them color. I want you to know that your life is always worth so much more than you think, and when I find you, I'll see how much better my life will get.
I want you to know that we will be dancing in the kitchen while we're cooking together, and I will rub your feet when you're sick. I'll always buy you wine over my favorite drink so I can see your eyes light up. I'll say no to the first dog but let you get three more after that. I'll hold you when you're crying into my chest when a family member passes and let you turn my hand red when our first child is born. I'll play with your hair until you fall asleep, and let you win in games but not tell you I did.
I'll talk to you as if each conversation is our last, and hug you like I'm saying goodbye forever. I'll be your biggest cheerleader and No. 1 supporter. When you go on a diet, I'll go on one too — but only in front of you. I'll be annoying and call you names like "Toenail" and "Stinky." I'll fight with your brothers and sister like I do with mine because your family is my family. I'll get excited to see your parents because what could be better than knowing people will do anything to keep you safe.
I want you to know that you have my full commitment, complete trust and whole heart. I need you to know that you are loved by me and that I'm out here waiting to find you because I know I'm loved by you too.
