A Letter To My College Grad Friends

Your leadership helped encourage others, whether you were President of a club or just a friendly face on campus.

A Letter To My College Grad Friends

Dear College Grads,

It was only on Saturday that you all crossed the stage, took a deep breath, shook the hand of President Lapidus and received your Undergraduate diploma in front of all of your loved ones. You finally did it! The conclusion of the ceremony marked the start of trying to maneuver through the sea of people before going out to celebrate, but it also marked the official start of a new chapter in all of your lives. Many of you may have no idea how that new chapter begins, while others have a set plan.

Regardless, know that you all had a specific journey during your time at Fitchburg State that affected others. Whether you were a traditional or non- traditional student. Graduated on time or were a "super- senior." Transfer or went here all four years, you have a unique story that made an impact.

As current and former members of executive boards of various clubs, student workers, tutors, Tour Guides, Orientation Leaders and Resident Assistants, you all achieved different accomplishments that influenced and informed the person you are today. You also helped shape the lives’ of those around you. For those who weren’t as involved in campus life, know that you made an impact as well. Your leadership helped encourage others whether you were President of a club or just a friendly face on campus.

I can't count the number of seniors that graduated who have helped me in some way, shape, or form during my time here at Fitchburg State, but I want to say thank you. Even if I only knew you for as short a span as one semester, I was grateful for it. Many of you don’t even realize how motivational you have been to others and what an impression you made during your time here. Thank you for being role models and teaching others to be involved in what you love. Thank you for leading underclassmen and passing on advice to those who can learn from it. Thank you for just being who you are.

What I have learned from you all is that, life is too short to not do what you love, and to make every moment count. I’ve learned that senior year is the time to do everything you have ever thought of doing, whether it’s trying out for dance club, or simply learning to relax. To follow your dreams and do what makes you happy, and to live without regrets. Most importantly, I’ve learned that these four years that seem like, “they’re going to take forever” go by much faster than you think, and to cherish the little things and the people you surround yourself with.

The class of 2016 has some of the most inspiring, hard-working and genuine individuals, and I feel lucky to know so many of you. I hope you all follow your dreams, and are able to make as large of an impact on the world as you did on Fitchburg State University...and on me.

Sincerely,

One of Many

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
