As a high school senior about to graduate and leave home, I have been thinking a lot about my high school years. Looking back, I have realized that I have learned so much over the past four years. There is so much that I thought I knew back then that I actually didn’t. As I look back, I have realized that the things that I thought mattered, actually didn’t, and the thing that I didn’t think mattered, actually did. Here are some of the things I learned over my journey throughout high school.
The grades you make freshman year count.
As you enter high school, the first words out of your counselor’s mouth are going to be, “Do not slack off freshman year, because it will affect the rest of your years here.” Well kids, those words are definitely true. You make think that making a C or a B your freshman year is okay, because you have time to make up for it, but as soon as your GPA drops, it is the most difficult thing to bring back up. Study and take your grades seriously from the first day of your high school career.
Being popular does not matter.
As every freshman enters high school, they think they need to get in with the “cool” crowd. Well let me tell you, those so called “cool” kids will do nothing but get you in trouble. Not being popular in high school is not the worst thing in the world. Find a group of kids who are like you and motivate you and let that be your group. Being popular does not get you into college.
Your parents do know what they are talking about.
This is the one most people will not believe me on, but I can promise you that it is true. There were so many moments in high school that I remember telling my parents that they didn’t know what it was like or they didn’t know what they were talking about. When I look back, I simply laugh at those moments, because they were exactly right. Whether it is about relationships, grades, friendships, or pretty much anything else, your parents will most likely be right when it comes to their advice. Do yourself a favor and take that advice, because proving them wrong normally turns out to be a failure.
Do not get into drama.
High school is literally the biggest place for drama. There is all this he said and she said and it is basically a bunch of big five year olds trying to pretend they are growing up. Do not listen to what people have to say and definitely do not be the one to help spread things. There will be rumors and the best thing is to just let all of it roll off of your shoulder, because being involved in drama just makes things worse on yourself.
Most importantly, have fun!
When you look back on your high school career, you don’t want to remember yourself as the kid who was always involved in drama and never had any fun. Go out with your friends and go to a movie or bowling or almost anything else. It doesn’t matter what you do, just have fun, because these are the moments you will remember for the rest of your life.
