An Open Letter To My Future Daughter

Dear Future Daughter,

You don’t know me yet, and I don’t know you (or your name), but I have been dreaming of you since I was a little girl (and probably coming up with names I’ve liked for you since I was 8). I am going to tell you all the things I want you to know so you can be the best little girl and grow up to be an awesome woman one day. And yes, I know you’re not coming for many, many years, but I want you to know the truth now. When I am a 21-year-old, what you need to know, from me, your mother.

Please, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are not worth it. You are! You have the most adorable smile, shiny hair and cute laugh! Whether you are three, or 23, you can't believe everything people tell you. Maybe they're jealous of you, maybe they just want to be your friend. But no matter what, never let anyone bring you down. Okay, daughter?

Daughter, I will tell you from experience: love is an awesome thing (sometimes). It gives you butterflies and can make you so happy (sometimes). However, do not ever let a boy tell you that you are not pretty enough, smart enough, tall enough, skinny enough or anything like that! You are enough, no matter what! You are you, and that makes you special. If that guy doesn’t see what he has standing in front of him, move along, little one. He has lost a very great prize! There are plenty of fish in the sea – believe me. I know it's corny and annoying to constantly hear, but it’s really true! However, enough with that. This conversation won’t be happening until you’re a teenager. I want you to be my little girl forever!

I will dress you in adorable little outfits that match my own. I will have Michael Kors sneakers and so will you. I will give you everything the world has to offer! I will give you love and joy and comfort like my mother has always given me. I will be your best friend, I will be your protector and I will be your warrior. Don’t forget, I’ll also be your teacher, your nurse and your chauffeur. Most of all, I will do all of that because you’re my daughter and I would do anything for you!

My little daughter, I can promise you that I will teach you how to be a smart little girl and a strong woman. I will tell you about my childhood and how I grew up, and about my family members that you didn’t get to meet. I will tell you about our family history and our heritage. I will teach you how to make some of my favorite Italian dishes (that is, if I have figured them out myself by that time!). But most of all, I will be your mommy and you will be my daughter and as soon as your lungs hit the air on this earth, I will love you and you will be mine!

Love,

Your Future Mommy

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
