Dear Freshman Me:
It's been three years since you started college. Man, how time flies. I remember the excitement of starting a new school. I still use most of the cute dorm stuff I bought on day one. I can't believe that we're a senior now. Only one year until we're no longer an undergraduate student. I can't believe it. There's so much I wish I could have told you beforehand. So many things I would do differently now.
I would have been less afraid of people. Social anxiety is real and by now, you've discovered that we have it. I wish I would have known that earlier on. Maybe I could have controlled it better. Maybe we could have avoided our depression. But you know better now. People aren't out to get us, but we're out to get ourselves by avoiding situations altogether. Freshman me, I know it was hard to overcome this. But look at us now. We joined a sorority and even liked talking through recruitment. Freshman me, I know you can't believe that we were this outgoing, but we were.
I would have stayed "undecided" freshman year too. You wasted a lot of time as a biology major. I'm sorry for that. Finding the right major matters more than anything. This is your future we're talking about. Luckily, you'll figure it out during sophomore year. I just want you to know it's okay to not know right now. We made it out alive and you'll see how happy Communication makes you. Don't pick something for the money or the comfort. Pick something you want to do and tackle it head on. Communication seems funny to us because we were so shy back then, but just look at where you are now.
If I could go back, I'd tell you to just go for it all. Go for everything you want to. Failure is scary, but it's worse to never try. Try out for the cheerleading team, dance at a party and just have fun with your life. College is the time to find yourself. I promise you will make it out okay. Look at us now, freshman me. We have a lot. You've been a chairman for your sorority, on the executive board for a club, and so much more. You have a working on your blog and writing for it every day. You never imagined this kind of life for yourself, but this is what we have. It's more than you dreamed of and better than you expected.
I want you to know that everything has turned out okay. Your future looks pretty bright now. There was a lot that got us to this point in our life. We've faced a lot of obstacles that we never imagined happing to us. The most important thing is that you found yourself. You discovered who you are and what you're meant for. I'm sorry I held us back for so long. I wish you could see the future like I do. You'd be so proud.
Love,
Senior Me
