The moment I accepted my bid into this organization, I knew I was in for a lifetime of happiness, friendships, and fun. I have made meaningful relationships and already have memories that will last a lifetime - from freezing during the Polar Plunge philanthropy event for Special Olympics, to proudly walking out of Initiation. But I never expected that these values instilled in the sorority would rub off on me so quickly.
Balance
Our four aims have guided me into a healthy lifestyle: intellectually, physically, socially, and spiritually. If I am struggling with a class, I know I can go to study tables, or reach out to another member who has taken the class and they will never say no to helping me out. I can post on social media that I want a workout buddy, and multiple sisters will text me saying they are looking for one too. I'll admit, the social aim throws off the "balance" part a little bit because it tends to take over a larger part of my life, but that is to be expected when an organization brings so many amazing people into my life. As for spiritual, I make sure to give myself time to reflect on what and whom God has put in my life and what I can do to further those connections.
Generosity
Sharing our gifts, talents, and time with others is so important and is often overlooked. I work a customer service job. Even on the most stressful and busy days, I try to keep a smile on my face and be extra kind to customers who seem to need a bit of happiness in their day. Though it isn’t an extraordinary gesture, it is one I can manage in my daily life, and hope that it affects at least one person positively.
Growth
Every opportunity I experience makes a difference in my life; turning negative situations into positive ones is something one of my sorority sisters taught me, which has helped me grow into a more understanding and encouraging person. I have been a soft-spoken person my entire life, and have never felt the need to be in the spotlight. However, since joining Alpha Sigma Alpha, I have eagerly awaited the chance to hold a leadership position. Knowing that I am surrounded by women who share similar values and a common love for the organization gives me the confidence to grow as a leader.
Integrity
I hold so much pride in my sorority, whether it's wearing my letters, throwing what I know around downtown Indianapolis, or just being a dedicated member. My actions and words directly affect Alpha Sigma Alpha. I have learned that at times it’s not easy to uphold your own personal morals and values, but respecting our founders, the current members, and the future members is my number one concern, whether I am wearing letters or not.
Learning
Although classroom learning is a huge part of life right now, the lessons learned from new member education, chapter meetings, and rituals are irreplaceable. Not to mention the advice and heart-to-hearts Alpha Sigma Alpha has given me by introducing me to my Big in the sorority.
Relationships
This value has impacted my life the most since joining my sorority. I got to know many of my sisters on a deeper level than I could have ever imagined very quickly. I have never met 100+ women who are so different from one another. Each member has different quirks, and a different story, but we have something that will bond us together not just for our short years in college, but for a lifetime. Being in a sorority provides you with so many chances to get to know the other members in your organization, especially with the Big and Little tradition. We might not talk 24/7, but my Big is always inspiring me to be who I am. Having someone that will always support you, stand up for you, and be your best friend is something I always envied before I joined a sorority.
Responsibility
Being a member of an organization is a huge privilege. We are responsible for attending required meetings and doing a required amount of service hours, but being a responsible member means going above and beyond the required amount. This is something most of us will always need to practice. Being responsible means we hold ourselves to certain standards and are committed to living in a way that supports our values and principles.
Enjoyment
Although there are rules to follow and standards to maintain, being a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha means that we joyously live each day to it’s ultimate good. We have fun and we cherish the times we share together.
Thank you to my sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha, for not only teaching me the true meanings of these values, but to also live a life of poise and purpose, and for giving me 100+ women I can call my best friends, to lean on when I need help and to celebrate the joys of life with.
