A Letter To My Summer Roommate

We're like Donald Trump and Boris Johnson except we are much more normal.

"There is nothing better than a friend. Unless it is a friend with chocolate.” -- Linda Grayson

Dear summer roommate,

Some people are put together on accident. Some people choose to be put together. And some people, like me, get lucky with who they live with. When I moved into the apartment, I had no idea of the friendship I was about to gain. I had no idea of the fun times that were to come. Or of the “road trips” we would go on, even if just two and a half hours away. I had no idea of any of it. And today, now that I am move out and summer session is over, I could not be more thankful for the times we have had, the experiences we endured, the advice you have given, and most of all, I could not be more thankful for being able to have met you. Okay, soppiness over. But seriously. I am so thankful for you.

Thank you for giving me advice about life, school, and, well, everything I could imagine. It is more than I ever could have imagined from a roommate.

Thank you for entertaining me. From crashes to people watching, the entertainment was, well, entertaining.

On that note, thank you for making fun of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson with me. And for embracing my theory that Donald was adopted and that he and Boris are actually brothers. Even if Donald wasn't adopted...

Thank you for taking me to “real-people” stores. Even if it was just a Target or Marshalls or regular grocery store, it was amazing. If college has taught me one thing, it is that shopping can be a rarity and anytime you get to go to a real store other than the Pit Stop or student stores, you go.

Thank you for understanding my anxiety. Yeah, it sucks sometimes, but living with someone who understands it is such a relief.

Thank you for making me watch "The Bachelorette." I don’t really think any explanation is needed here but from laughing at all the emotions of the guys, and Jojo for that matter, bonding over The Bachelorette was always the highlight of Mondays.

Thank you for teaching me that you can live with people. After a bad situation, my hope for humanity was restored when I met you and spent the summer with a fabulous human.

Thank you for making me go to the mall. Two malls, actually. It let me take a break from classes and sitting on the couch watching House.

Speaking of, thank you for watching "House" with me. Bonding over the exciting and gross symptoms and diagnoses and the sometimes unrealistic-ness of the show was another highlight of the summer.

Thank you for letting me find someone so similar to me. From only child to the love of shopping to still deciding what we are doing with out lives, I’m glad we met and bonded over all of these things!

Thank you for having to make pounds of mac ‘n cheese and giant cookies. The kitchen may have been a mess for a few days after but using three and a half pounds of cheese for Mac ‘n Cheese was quite the experience.

Summer was great and I couldn’t have done it without you. For everything you’ve done, thank you! I wish we had a few dozen more summers like this one but I guess the school year will have to do.

Xoxo,

Your summer roommate

P.S. Thanks for loving my puppy so much!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
