Dear Summer,
Ever since I was a little kid I counted down the days from the first day of school until you would arrive again. I eagerly awaited the long hot days with the neighborhood kids spent at the pool, then coming home early afternoon to catch the ice cream truck using the money we raised from our latest lemonade stand. It seemed as though in the blink of an eye, lemonade stands turned into summer jobs. Handfuls of quarters turned into 3 digit paychecks and neighborhood play dates turned into high school parties with friends. We couldn't remember what summer was like without a car and quickly ditched the tankini for swimsuits probably a size too small.
We so quickly wished it all away and wanted nothing but to leave for college. It wasn't until I came home the summer after my freshman year that I longed for nothing but summers from the past. We were in our prime and didn't even know it. We were virtually stress free. Now, summer consisted of summer classes, full time jobs and friends that lived all over the country. It was a constant internal struggle to convince ourselves to go out because after a long days work nothing sounds better than laying in bed wasting the night on Netflix. The only thing we looked forward to was road trips to visit our best friends in foreign cities. We never thought we'd say it, but we now counted down the days until we could go back to school. Summer wasn't was it used to be and neither were we. We're grateful for the memories of the past summers that fill our minds, but now with each summer that passes, it's as though we are one year closer to being in the real world. That being said, I thank you summer for some of the best nights I've ever had, and wishfully hope there is more to come.
