A Letter To My Little

With my sorority's big/little reveal being this week, I hope my future little is just as excited as I am.

A Letter To My Little
Illinois State Sigma Alpha

I remember my big/little reveal like it was yesterday. When I received my big sister in Sigma Alpha, it was the first real moment that I felt like I belonged in my sorority. I finally felt like I had a sister to turn to, one that was active and had been through the beginning process of joining before. My big and I are super close, and since both of us are on the executive board of my sorority, we talk and message all the time. Whether it’s skipping classes to go on a coffee run, staying late after chapter just to rant about life, or talking on the phone at any time of day, my big and I are really good friends. With my little finding out this week that I am her big sister, I hope that her and I can have the same relationship that I have with my big. This is a letter to my future little.

Dear Little,

I know you don’t know who I am yet, but when I found out that you were my little, I started screaming with joy and texted all of my friends that I am your big (ask all my roommates). I am so excited to spoil you with gifts, love, and encouragement. I hope you and I can have the same relationship that my big and I have; having a good friend like her is one of the things I love most about our sorority. We are so excited to welcome you into our Greek family because you are a perfect fit. You are determined, focused, and have the amazing leadership qualities that every sister in our family possesses.

I know the stresses of what the Membership Candidate process are from being in it last year, and I know you’re more than ready to become an active sister. Stick through it because it’s all worth it in the end. There are times you’re going to want to quit, back down, or give up, but my advice to you is to keep going -- don’t quit -- we all want you to succeed. You now have a big sister who is there for you through it all.

I’ve been looking forward to getting a little since I got my big last year. I have speculated who you might be -- what you are like, what you are interested in, and if we would be similar. I can say since the moment I found out you were my little I was overjoyed. Over the summer, I was planning crafts and pinning items like crazy on my Pinterest boards. I have had hundreds of gift ideas running through my head about what I wanted to give you on the night of reveal. I hope you enjoy my “somewhat” ability to craft (you know, being a sorority girl and all). I hope everyone gets jealous about how much I spoil you with gifts.

All in all, I hope you know that I am always going to be there for you. Whether you want to go out and eat your heart out in dessert after a long week, enjoy the nice weather on the trail, vent to one another about life, or just hang out, I will be there. I can’t wait until you know who I am; it’s been so hard keeping the secret (I’ve almost spilled the beans three times). I hope you’re just as excited for me to be your big as I am that you’re my little.

In sisterhood,

Ashley

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
