An Open Letter To The Presumptive Nominees

Can you guys not make everything that happens in this country about you?

In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, 49 innocent lives have been lost, 53 more victims have been hospitalized, the entire LGBT community has been raided and our country’s future leaders have decided to take this opportunity to get their agendas across.

While presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, initially expressed her thoughts and prayers for the victims, their families and the first responders, she did not skip a beat and issued a statement addressing some of her key platform points, specifically her plans for gun control, terrorism and gay rights.

On the other hand, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump jumped right into his presidential campaign habits, showing only the slightest bit of sympathy in a tweet that was followed by another where he recognized himself as “being right on radical Islam terrorism.” In Trump’s statement, he also addressed his presidential platform by strongly reiterating his stance on immigration and his solution of banning Muslims from “nations tied to Islamic terror.”

Both of the candidates passed up the opportunity to put their campaigns on hold out of respect for the victims of the Orlando shooting, and instead tried to push their own political agendas into the spotlight in a time of national tragedy. This decision perfectly embodies the character of both of these politicians and signifies the types of leaders they will be.

Hillary, we get it. You’re a Democrat. And Trump, we all know how you feel about foreigners and how excited you get about walls. I promise we heard you the first hundred times. But honestly, did you both really think it would be a good time to bring up the policies you plan to push if you get elected, just hours after 49 people were killed. Those 49 lives were not only LGBT lives; they were American lives. The same lives that you both promise to presumably protect once you’re president. And those American lives had American families and American friends, who are all still in mourning over their loved ones.

I don’t know what kind of loss you two have been through *cough* filing for bankruptcy *cough* Benghazi *cough* but for us everyday citizens, it takes more than a few hours to get over a terrorist massacre on our home soil. And we get it, it’s your job to address these incidents and explain how you would respond if you were president, but you aren’t president. As of right now, there is no policy that either of you can implement that will ban automatic rifles or ban Muslim immigrants. That’s someone else’s job for the time being.

Here’s what you guys can do though: you can step out of the spotlight for a minute and allow the nation to really come to terms with what happened. You can temporarily suspend your campaigns out of respect for the victims and their families, I mean c’mon, you’ve basically already got your party’s nomination and the conventions haven’t even happened yet. You can go to a blood drive and donate blood since the hospital tending to those wounded in the shooting needs it so badly. You can go to Orlando and visit the victims’ families or the other 53 people who were wounded and while you’re there try not to talk about yourself and instead simply be there for them and comfort them and show them that you care about them as individuals.

I don’t know, maybe that’s too much to ask of the prospective leader of the nation where this tragedy just occurred. You both already have enough on your plate with the fundraisers and the political butt-kissing (looking at you Hillz) and all the roasting each other on Twitter and stuff. But that’s what government is all about, right? The selfish interests of politicians and the politics that accompany those interests. Because government by the people, FOR the people is so overrated, right? Well, this is the people talking and we’d love to hear all about your plans to ban big guns and build big walls another day, but for right now you need to take a step back and let this nation heal.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
