An Open Letter To My Not-So-Baby Brother

While I may roll my eyes sometimes, you are smart, caring, incredibly driven, and you have the ability to change the world.

An Open Letter To My Not-So-Baby Brother

Dear “Baby” Brother,

When you came crashing into our world, I had no idea that I would be so lucky. When my sister first heard that you were going to be born, as six and three year olds, our thoughts were mostly: “A boy? Ew.” What do you do with a baby brother?

But very soon after you arrived, you became one of the most important members of our family, bringing your contagious laughter and silly sense of humor into the world. You continuously brought joy, be it through your toothless smiles or our attempts to make you our own real-life baby doll.

Life’s changed a lot since then (especially since you’re three times bigger than me…). I’m in college while you’re trekking though middle school. Sometimes it can be hard to communicate. Our schedules are completely different, as well as our interests (I’m not well versed in computer knowledge, and I doubt you care about who the contestants of The Bachelor are). But at the end of the day, we always make it work.

Being at home for your fourteenth birthday has really made me think about how lucky I am. While we are 6 years apart, our relationship is not like many other teenagers. You are still one of my best friends, my confidants, and my partner in crime.

So I wanted to leave you this: As I am about to head back to college, and you back to middle school, I want you to remember a couple things I may not be around to tell you this semester:

Middle School sucks (it’s a given fact), and you’re going to get through it.

While I may roll my eyes sometimes, I know your talents (like with computers and percussion) are incredible and I’m genuinely impressed by how skilled you are.

Girls still have cooties. I promise.

You are never too old for Disney (plus it’s fun to have a sing-along buddy in the car).

You’re an awesome kid. You are gonna kick butt in high school next year. But don’t spend too much time worrying about it quite yet, you’ve got plenty of time.

While popularity may seem like the most important way to the top, it never is. Enjoy the friends you have because you like them, not because they will make you “cool”.

The middle sis is now in charge (this wasn’t my idea).

Trust our parents. While sometimes they may seem frustratingly wrong, usually they know a thing or two to help us out. Plus they love you. like. a lot.

Study. I know it’s not fun…but Mom would kill me if this wasn’t on the list.

If you do something wrong, know I’ll hear about it from our sister. She knows everything.

Take care of the family, your make everyone laugh.

Even when I’m far away, you can still call me (pleeeeeaaassseeee).

I’m still your big sister. I make the rules.

You are smart, caring, incredibly driven, and you have the ability to change the world.

I love you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
