Dear Sister,
Sometimes it's hard to believe that we're technically not sisters but cousins. You have literally been my light and guidance since, well, I was born. And without you, I don't know if I would be the woman I am today.
Growing up, we have been fortunate enough to watch the brotherhood of our dads. Because of this bond they have shared, we subsequently were able to live in their shadows and form a similar relationship. With you being six years older, I've had you for every turning point in my life.
You were a friend to play with, a babysitter after school, guidance counselor, my complete role model for just about everything (I seriously wanted to be you.. still kinda do), and then somewhere along the line the age difference vanished and we became best friends.
Through every drastic event or mundane issue, you are always there. I mean even being cities away now, I can count on you to answer every text and call. From giving me advice and answering questions on puberty, first kisses, friends who have come and gone, college, heartbreaks, identity crises and careers you've really had your hands full. (Sorry!) And at some point, it seems we synched up and experienced every emotional stage together. When you were low I was low; when you were high, I also rose.
I guess in a way we are one and always will be. You are the definition of a soul sister. Being farther apart then we'd like to be now, our time spent together is essential to our mental health. Simply through talking to one another we always find some ease and usually the answers to our problems.
You know me better than me. Even our moms say in astonishment that we ARE sisters, the connection is undeniable. And when people ask if we are sisters and say we look like, we always exchange this smile like all is right in the world because someone else can see it.
Sister, you forever inspire me. You encourage my crazy, welcome my weird, and push for me to be more.
I don't think I'll ever stop being eternally grateful to the universe for placing my best friend in my family. But, I'll also never stop admiring you for choosing to be my sister.
Love you always,
xx
