A Letter of Appreciation to My Mom
Max Finkelberg

Mom,

You know how much I've said "I love you," and I mean it every time. When you brought me into the world, I knew we would embark on big adventures. Trust me, we wanted to tear each other apart on some of those trips, but it was all worth it. When I look back to those days, I laugh and we both say, "Never again."

You have been with me at my best and worst. From preschool to now, you've seen it all. You put up with me when I went through that stupid phase where I called you "mama" and "mumsy." I still have a Valentine's Day card that says, "Happy Valentine's Day Mama - Love Max."

Thank you for putting up with my insane thoughts. We both know I have no idea what I say half the time. Thank you for bringing me closer to my grandpa, the only grandparent I ever knew. I still remember going to the 56th Fighter Group restaurant in Farmingdale (which is now, sadly, permanently closed) where we ate chicken fingers, saw fighter planes and danced to old '40s music. You gave me a special bond with him until his death in 2008.

You've made me the person I am today. You've been there for me when I was battling adversity, and I've been there for you for the same. I have dramatically changed in the past few years, and while I had to learn from my experiences, you were by my side as I matured.

I remember coming home from school every day at the door to give you a big hug. Everyone goes through the "mom, you're embarrassing me" phase, and yes, while some things you do are still annoying, they are also hilarious.

I'm sometimes afraid to stand up for myself, but you've shown me how to stand my ground. I know I got some bad behaviors from you, but I definitely got some good ones, as well. That's perfectly normal, as it's all a part of human nature.

In the last decade, we experienced some life-changing events. I believed in you when you changed careers and you did the same as I transitioned to college. There's no doubt it was very difficult for both of us, but look at us now. I don't think we ever expected any of this to happen, but I'm glad it did because everything worked out.

Thank you, Mom. This definitely won't be the last time I write something like this to you. I can't wait to see what kind of adventures we'll go on together in the future.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
