The big thing nowadays is social media. Everyone is almost on social media now like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on. But the thing is how fake people have become on these sites. What I mean is that people edit photos of themselves kind of like Photoshop and also pose as people they aren’t with fake accounts. Social media in my eyes has become deluded with this vision of the perfect person.
I don’t mean like Barbie or Ken, but I mean one that has a clear complex, is physically endowed and looks for attention. But that’s not your true form; social media was developed to keep people in contact with one another. Now it has become a beauty pageant of who looks better or who is partying with who. I have social media to interact with my friends and coworkers and also maintain those relationships that I have developed. I don’t act like someone I’m not, I know it sounds cliché but I stay true to myself and am not afraid to be myself.
I feel that the standards of society have changed, scaring people to think they have to subject themselves to these standards that have been set in place. I know that a lot of people fat-shame others on social media and I feel that it is cruel. I know that promoting healthy eating and exercise comes with great intentions but can drive people into worse situations. People don’t understand that they do not need to prove anything to anyone on social media. Social media should be a place that is bully-free and people should be able to express themselves freely and be confident with who they are.
I know that everyone judges one another, but when you judge someone, get to know them first before you predetermine them as weird or not popular. I want people to be able to use social media for the reason why it was created, instead of a platform for bullying and shaming people. Rethink next time before you edit that photo of yourself or judge someone before you get to know them. Times are changing, so become the people that encourage this type of change and make the cyber world a better place.
