The NBA Finals rematch is set. The Cleveland Cavaliers will take on the defending champions, the Golden State Warriors.
This has been booked not only as a title rematch, but as a number of other things. Nike vs. Under Armor. Speed vs. Size. A city that never wins vs. one that looks like a dynasty. But let’s stop kidding ourselves and be honest. This year’s NBA finals can only be described accurately in one way—LeBron James vs. Stephen Curry.
When James came into the league, it was not long before his place at the top of the NBA was secured. He was too big, too strong, and too talented to be held back. James dominated the league in route to four MVP awards, and two NBA Championships with the Miami Heat. Driving his way to the rim, James sat down all who dared oppose him. When talk about Kevin Durant being the best player in the NBA came to fruition, James stomped them down. His Heat smashed Durant’s Thunder on the big stage, as James flourished to a Final’s MVP award. He was unquestionably the reining, undisputed best player on the planet. Was.
Then, last year, Stephen Curry happened. Yes, Curry had been in the league for a few years before he broke out as a true star, but when he did, he did it with a bang. Curry, using the three point shot like a dagger being driven into his opponents, sprinted his way to his first MVP award. When he met James in the 2015 Finals, the stage was set for LeBron James to be the hero. He had left Cleveland a villain, and returned as the white knight who would finally bring the city a championship; Curry had other plans. His Warriors made James’ Cavaliers submit, beating them four games to two. Curry was the league’s MVP, and he had beaten the man. He had beaten him badly, in front of everyone.
This year, Curry finds himself securing another MVP award. He has led his Warriors back to the NBA Finals, looking to repeat as champions. Like last year, LeBron James is waiting for them. It is Curry’s three-pointer vs. James’ drive. Current MVP vs. Former. Steph Curry vs. LeBron James. Only this time, LeBron James must win.
James, carrying the weight of an entire city on his back, has no choice but to beat Curry. When he sees Curry on the court, he will be looking directly at the man who is everything he was. The MVP, the hero, the favorite, the alpha, the number one jersey seller. LeBron James will look across the court like he is staring in a mirror. With back to back MVPs, Curry is even wearing the king’s crown. If LeBron James wants it back, he has no choice but to win.
