College is such a weird transitional time. You lived through the last few teenage years and are now just hitting your 20s. We're going through Marquette with the sole intention of finding employment. Yet working for the rest of our lives sounds mildly horrifying.
We don't have a rigorous 7-4 schedule like we did in high school, but free time is never quite free. There's always a task to be done or something that you're pushing off. All college students are in this zone of "adulthood" without being an adult.
Personally the notion that someone would consider me a full-fledged adult makes me want to hysterically laugh in their face (then slowly sob as I slide into a ball on the ground).
Being in this almost-adult zone is terrifying.
You are responsible for getting yourself out of bed everyday. You get yourself to class, your lab, the gym, and to your advisor's office.
You may have had a job for years, but you haven't started a career.
We have to call for our own doctor's appointments and figure out when it works into our schedules, because you know Mom isn't going to take you anymore.
You have to call the cable company to come fix the TV. After you finally garnered enough effort to make the 45-minute call, you schedule a repairperson to fix your problem. Great work! Except now a person is coming to your apartment. Are you suppose to hover behind them while they work? What if they need something and can't find you? Is this as uncomfortable for them as it is for you? Can you be on your phone during this exchange? How much small talk is appropriate? How much is this going to cost? Do you tip them?
Not to mention that we're totally responsible for feeding ourselves and maintaining our appearance. How is a person suppose to do all these things and stay sane at the same time?
Yes, I can Google the answer to these questions (and I definitely did) but the Internet doesn't know my life well enough to have an automatic answer for me. Fear of the unknown is at work in our lives constantly. All these adult tasks give me the same kind of anxiety that answering the question, "What are you going to do with the rest of your life?," does. Because frankly, I have no freaking clue.
I've asked peers who seem to be well on their way to "adulthood" how they do it, and every single time they look at me like I'm crazy. Everyone is pretending to have their shit together, they say. No one actually does.
Admittedly, this is kind of nice to hear. It's kind of like when the whole class fails the same test and a sense of camaraderie is born, except, in this case, that test is actually life.
