It's true: most TV shows and movies are based upon fiction. But, just because something surreal is being portrayed, that doesn't necessarily mean that we can't learn from the topics and adapt the knowledge to use in our daily lives. Like other human beings out there, I watch (and even obsess over) many TV shows and movies, so I thought that I could use "writing an article about TV shows and movies" as an excuse to sit and yes, watch more TV shows and movies.
"But Lucia... What can we actually learn from fake shows?" you ask. Well, I'm here to tell you. First, I'll start with out movies I love, and sooner or later, we'll gradually make our way to my favorite TV shows.
1. "The Imitation Game" (2014)
The move "The Imitation Game" does a great job in not only recounting a story about the War, but it also does a great job in teaching people about love for yourself and others. Whether it be making a life-changing machine (the computer) and naming it after someone you love, or just learning how to treat yourself and others with respect, this movie has it all. Not to mention, this movie also brings up the idea of "mind reading," which is a big cause of anxiety to many. With one phrase, we realize that we really can't possibly know what someone is thinking, so assuming things and having them turn out correctly might not work 100 percent of the time. Like honestly, this movie is amazing.
"Sometimes it's the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine." -Christopher
"When people talk to each other, they never say what they mean. They say something else and you're expected to just know what they mean." -Alan
"Just because something thinks differently from you, does that mean it's not thinking?" -Alan
2. "Brooklyn" (2015)
OK, this movie got me messed up. I've never cried so hard watching a movie. This girl left her family and came to a country where she basically knew nobody. Then she got picked on a bit for not being a cool American. So, she finally gets a boyfriend who's like amazing and her life is going pretty well...and then her sister dies. She goes back home to Ireland where she realizes that it really isn't her "home" anymore; Brooklyn is.
This movie, not only teaches us about courage and bravery, but also about love. It shows us that we shouldn't be afraid to be ourselves and that we shouldn't be afraid to break rules if it means that we can be happy.
"Homesickness is like most sicknesses. It will pass." -Fr. Flood
"You'll feel so homesick that you'll want to die, and there's nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won't kill you... and one day the sun will come out and you'll realize that this is where your life is." -Eilis
3. "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (2015)
This movie was literally full of everything...drama, action, comedy, suspense, and even romance. Honestly, it was a hilarious movie and it definitely helped its watchers to understand that no matter where you come from, or who you are, you have the power to make yourself the person you want to be.
"Manners maketh man." -Harry Hart
"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." -Harry Hart (quoting Ernest Hemingway)
"I'm a Catholic whore, currently enjoying congress out of wedlock with my black Jewish boyfriend who works at a military abortion clinic. So, hail Satan, and have a lovely afternoon, madam." -Harry Hart (speaking to a woman in a Hate Group)
4. Harry Potter
Oh God. Harry Potter literally was/is my life. If you tell me you don't like Harry Potter, I won't hate you, but I won't associate myself with you either. I've read the books and watched the movies so many times that I can recite the lines at the exact same times as the actors.
Harry Potter quotes are my favorite ones. These books and movies taught me so much about life, love, courage, friendship and just how to let loose.
"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." -Albus Dumbledore
"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." -Albus Dumbledore
"It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -Albus Dumbledore
“The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed.” -Albus Dumbledore
" If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." -Sirius Black
"Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect." -Luna Lovegood
5. "Gossip Girl"
I honestly am so mad at myself for not watching this show sooner. I just thought "If I'm already basically going to school with the characters in "Gossip Girl," why should I watch the show?" But, i was missing out so bad. This show is the most dramatic, hilarious, accurate representation of the "Upper East Side life."
Moreover, this TV show made me realize many, many things. One big realization this show gave me was that if you want something, and it can't really hurt others, you shouldn't just let it go. However, if you end up letting it go, things will come back if they were meant to be.
I also learned that your past is what made you the person you are today. We can choose to move on and learn from the past, but you can never truly forget the choices that brought you to where you are today.
"Love is like head wound. It make you dizzy, you think you die, but you recover. Usually." -Dorota
"If two people are meant to be together, eventually they’ll find their way back." -Chuck Bass
"If you really want something, you won’t stop for anyone or anything until you get it." -Blair Waldorf
"You can’t make people love you, but you can make them fear you." -Blair Waldorf
6. "Once Upon A Time"
OK, where do I begin? This show was my favorite show for most of my time in High School. It's hilarious, action-packed, suspenseful and sometimes...it can be a real tear-jerker.
This show has taught me so much about love, believing in yourself, confidence and much more. It has been my fave show to steal quotes from for the longest time because of it's massive inspiration rates. So, prepare yourselves for many quotes now.
"There's magic everywhere if you’re willing to see it." -The Dragon
"We all have the capability to change and the future is not written by our past." -Robin Hood
"We can be happy in the future or we can be angry about the past." -Maleficent
"If it can be broken, that means it still works." -Killian Hook
"Someone once told me to act like what you plan to be so I try to act a little better than I am." -Cora Mills
"If you love them and they love you, they will always find you." -Mary Margaret
"It’s so much easier to get people to hate something than to believe." -Peter Pan
"If you’re ever lucky enough to find true love, you should fight for it. Every day." -Will Scarlett
7. "Once Upon A Time (in Wonderland)"
Sadly, this show, which was added on to regular "Once Upon A Time," was ended shortly. Like OUAT, this show taught me a lot about love, sacrifices, and confidence. I loved this show so much though.
"We all come into each others lives for a reason, sometimes it's just a different one than we thought." -Cora Mills
"If we live our lives looking at the past, we'll never be able to move forward to our future together." -Alice
"Confidence. Confidence is a terribly sexy quality in a woman." -Will Scarlett
"I love you for who you truly are, not for who I want you to be." -Will Scarlett
To summarize this whole article, the TV shows and movies we watch can teach us many things that we can use in the future. They teach us how to love, think, understand and act differently.
