Writing for a year changed the way I look at myself.

On October 8th, I will have been writing for Odyssey for a year. Applying to write is one thing that I will never regret. Not only have I learned more about writing and met great people that I wouldn't have otherwise, I have also learned more about myself. To the people who are considering applying to write for Odyssey, do it. It might be time-consuming, however, you have a platform to write whatever you want and put your opinions into the world. I have put together a list of what I have learned over this past year.

1. Don't be afraid to say how you feel.

There are so many people who think the same things as you and feel how you feel but either have no way to talk about it with a wide variety of people or they are scared to talk about it. Be their voice. Be the person that will show others they aren't alone. I have written articles about people in my life and they have gotten around. After that, I was scared to write about things personal to me because I didn't want anyone to jump to conclusions or judge me. However, I have started to not care and realized that their opinions don't matter. I am writing about how I feel and for people who can relate to me, not to be judged. If people judge me for how I feel, that's their own fault.

2. People may not agree with what you want to write, but still write it.

Some people in my life don't want me to write about some of the things I do. However, I still do. They always support me and I know they do, but they are just looking out for me. As much as I appreciate that, I believe that there is a reason I am here and there is a reason I am writing for Odyssey. I am here to share my story and help people who have been through what I have. I will never regret what I write.

3. You are strong.

Writing for this platform will show your strength. You are putting yourself out there; you're in a vulnerable position by writing how you feel and putting your story on the internet. Whatever you write about, people can judge you. But you write about it anyway. You are so strong and inspiring for not letting people hold you back.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
