If you're a freshman in college, like me, then the past couple of weeks has probably been a whirlwind. You've been to almost too many social events, met a lot of new people from a lot of different places, and begun your first college classes. Each school has it's own unique environment and quirks that no other university has. During my first week at Clemson, I've already noticed a few things that you won't find at any other campus.
1. Cardio is a Requirement
The first line of Clemson's alma mater reads, "Where the Blue Ridge yawns it's greatness." You'll quickly realize that a walk to class, the parking lot, or even the dining hall will probably never be a breeze since you have to walk up and down several very steep hills. On top of that, your dorm might not even have an elevator and you live on the third floor. It'll all be worth it once you develop those killer calves.
2. Solid Orange Friday is No Joke
When they tell you to wear orange on Fridays, you better. Otherwise, you stick out like a sore thumb in a lecture hall of 300+ people.
3. Friends are Easier to Find than You May Think
In my case, I live on a hall where almost all of the girls are AVS majors, which made it easy to connect. However, you'll also make friends at the one million and one social events that Clemson hosts for its freshmen. You'll make friends from different parts of the country or maybe even a entirely different country. You might end up teaching your new Yankee friends how to speak southern lingo.
4. Cadence Count
If you weren't raised a Clemson fan, then you probably have no idea what this is. Within the first couple of days, you'll quickly catch on this chant. "T-I-G-E-Rrrrr-S!" Don't you dare forget the "Woo!" at the end.
5. Cockroaches
This may sound weird, but you can't walk the campus at night without crossing paths with more than a couple cockroaches. If you were once grossed out by these critters, you'll have to adjust quickly.
6. my.Clemson
This is an app that has many accommodations for students. But, if isn't already, the map feature will be your best friend. It's your go-to guide on how to get to classes, the bookstore, and your dining hall. Otherwise, you'll be late for your first lab because you're wandering around looking for this totally hidden building.
Despite the cockroaches and never-ending cardio workout, I'm proud to now be able to call Clemson home along with the other 3,700 freshmen. Here's to the next four years on this beautiful campus!
