LaVar Ball has generated an enormous amount of controversy during his time in the spotlight. His outlandish opinions, unrealistic expectations, and ridiculous comments have made him an extremely interesting figure in the media.
For those unfamiliar with Mr. Ball, he is the father of Lonzo Ball — the Los Angeles Laker's first round pick in the NBA draft.
LaVar also has two other sons, LiAngelo and LaMelo, who he claims will also play for the Lakers.
The family has rapidly gained popularity for their talent on the court with their father's extreme behavior. LaVar has made a name for himself in particular, by claiming things that seem to be far from feasible.
For example, the father of three said in an interview that he could, "beat Michael Jordan 1 on 1 in basketball."
This comes from the same LaVar Ball that averaged a measly two points per game at the collegiate level. Say what you want about LaVar, but there is no denying that he is popular.
In fact, that may be his goal entirely. While many people are astonished by his comments, it's easy to overlook his other motives.
While generating buzz with his interviews, he is also generating buzz with his sons. LaVar claims outrageous predictions in almost every interview he has had. Additionally, his performance on WWE RAW was extreme, to say the least.
However, his behavior is most likely a tactic to help market his "Big Baller Brand" and his sons themselves.
Clearly, LaVar has a method to his madness. While he has no problem making a fool of himself, his actions are definitely helping his sons stay relevant. The Ball's have become a household name in the basketball industry but their brand still has a long way to go.
The release of Lonzo's shoes came as a shock to the sneaker community with a hefty $495 price tag.
LaVar claimed that if one couldn't afford them, then they simply "are not a big baller." An extremely bold move, especially after Lonzo was denied shoe contracts from industry leaders such as Nike and Adidas.
The Ball's will most likely remain in the spotlight for as long as LaVar wishes but only time will tell how their brand will develop, and whether or not LiAngelo and LaMelo will follow in their brother's footsteps. However, one thing is for sure — LaVar's efforts to stay relevant are working, even if the press is not so positive.
