Hey there.
I'm new to the game and this is in fact, my debut article. I figure it best to start off with a softball down the pipe. Every month or so I'll be updating each and every one a yah's on the good, bad, and ugly going on in the sports world. Here we go…
The Good
We have eight-ounce gloves, baby. Last week, ESPN reported that the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved the fighter's request to go down to eight-ounce gloves instead of the previously agreed upon 10-ounces. Now on the record, I'm not a betting man, off the record, I still recommend $100 on Mayweather 12/12 rounds.
But, that doesn't mean we can't get excited over the Irishman finessing his way down to 8-ouncers, does it? Fook no. Anything that adds to the "but what if he lands" scenario that holds all of us fight fans captive is good for the event. Mayweather has glass hands, we know this, and the lighter the gloves means, most likely, the lighter the punches from the Money man. McGregor might have a little more wiggle room to use his arsenal of unorthodox punches from unique positions and distance to get past Mayweather's guard. It ain’t gonna happen, but it is damn fun to speculate.
Don't quote me on this but I heard McGregor automatically wins two rounds if Bruce Buffer is on the mic to start the night.
August 26th baby, August 26th.
The Bad
I just mentioned the gang over at ESPN, but this news isn’t any good news. Someone, or a group of someones, decided that taking a scene directly out of Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed Get Out and using it for a fantasy football skit was a no brainer, sure fire, hit of an idea. They’re struggling for content, sure, but auctioning off OBJ to that excited bald white dude from the back row in the name of “new segments” is a little iffy to me.
I just don’t know how Stephen A. didn’t come across this and launch a stutter-to-death tactic long enough for ANYONE to come to their senses. Just stick with the snake draft, please.
Amidst all the reactions on Twitter, KD sums it up best here …
The Ugly
Admittedly, I grew up a devoted Florida State fan. This one hurts. Former 2013 Lou Groza Award winner, 2014 Consensus All-American, and 2014 National Champion Roberto Aguayo was cut from the Buccaneers in one of the more brutal Hard Knocks scenes I’ve ever had to watch. Although it could have been more brutal for the executives who decided drafting a kicker in the 2nd round was a bright idea. But what do I know? I’ve been playing fantasy for 10+ years and I don’t ever draft a kicker. Gimme three QB’s and I’ll hit the waiver wire.
Thankfully, Aguayo was just claimed by the Chicago Bears and a change in scenery might help the kid out. Although you have to assume the weather conditions are stacked against him now.
Here's one of those reaction shots we've all come to know and love, captured as the deed was being done. Hate to see it...
